At the begging of time there lived a great dragon, the dragon was invisible. When he moved - he moved as the wind, when he stood still - he stood still as the mountains, when he spoke - he spoke in a silent voice that could only be heard in the vibrations he created in everything, it was a language understood by all other dragons but spoken by none, the fire he could bellow from within him was as invisible as the dragon himself, some say this dragon was made completely of the invisible flame.

All the dragons that lived in his kingdom loved the great dragon very much and gratefully benefited from their masters kindness and all seeing wisdom, although they could never see or hear him they could still watch and hear him talk in the wind as it whistled past their ears and supported their wings in flight, and in the earth as it trembled beneath their feet… none of the great dragons subjects wanted for anything, for all they needed was all around them.

As time went on and years became decades, decades became centuries and centuries became millennia, because the great dragon was invisible many of his subjects simply forgot he existed and they grew increasingly self obsessed, lazy, and greedy… most of the dragons by this time had began to eat magical berries which gave the invisible flame they could breath a colour which they all thought was so beautiful and spectacular, it was a trend that caught on fast and was practiced by most dragons except for the wise ones who still knew their master... These are real dragons we're talking about here, not the ones in fairy tales; these dragons don't use their flames for destroying villages and devouring maidens, no. Real dragons have to forage for their food and fulfilment in vast forests, using their flames occasionally, to clear the way when there’s too many trees to fly through, and so every dragon with a coloured flame could no longer see through the trees as they burned, and so many dragons were crashing into trees and hurting themselves, and all they had to do was to accept that the pretty colours of their flames were more of a hindrance to them than anything else, some learnt their lesson but many were to wound up about finding the prettiest colour to breath and following the fashions of others. Although the great dragon saw them all becoming quite a nuisance to themselves, and he’d become forgotten to many of them, the great dragon smiled and laughed at the foolishness of his subjects and the earth gently shook, scaring the hell out of all the dragons that forgot he was there with them.

More time elapsed and some of the dragons had started bickering amongst themselves claiming that the colour of their scales was more pretty than another’s, and began to fight amongst themselves and created divisions between them. In the dragons schoolyard the kid dragons who couldn’t decide which flame colour to have and thought it all a little silly so kept their flames clear became ridiculed and teased by all the other dragon kids even more than the ones with different colours used to taunt one another, most of the adult dragons who kept their flames clear were run out of dragon society and forced to live in caves far away. The reason these dragons with clear flames instilled so much fear in the hearts of the others was a mystery to all but the older and wiser dragons who'd developed the strongest clear flames, who knew that fear was in the hearts of the other dragons simply because the clear flame reminded them of the master they forgot.

As the great dragon was watching these things unfold he felt sad for his subjects and the way they had let the curiousness of their innocence and naivety become such a destroyer amongst them, he began thinking about what his subjects once were and what they could be if only more would remember him… and with the fond memories of the innocence of his subjects and with the sadness at their forgetting him and squabbling over the very things that were hurting them his heart compassionately warmed for them and melted all the ice in the cooler regi

RE: The Forgotten Dragon

Hi, Ithar, thanks for sharing about The Fogotten Dragon, so funny as the town in cornwall were I was born called Helston in Cornwall has a tale about a dragon, the dragon flew over the village and drop a boulder on it and so it was called Hells stone (Helston now). On May the 8th each year the story is reinacted (Hal-un-Tow) through the streets on a day called Flora Day.

RE: The Forgotten Dragon

I have just finished reading two dragon books by Chris D'Lacey.
'The fire within' and 'Icefire'

Both books I finished within 24 hours, they were that good.

Thought I would recomend!
