Hi folks, I'm teetering on the edge of starting a drumming circle - a dream very close to my heart for some time.
Couple of questions then - has anyone here experience of starting up a circle and any tips to be going on with? At the moment I'm intending working with the drums and allowing them to lead us rather than going straight into drummed journeys.
Also, I've thought of buying some cheapish bodhrans for attendees to use and/or buy for themselves since I only have three drums myself. Would this be a good idea, and does anyone know where I can buy plain, reasonable priced bodhrans? Doesn't have to be them, but frame drums are horrendously expensive...
Any input gratefully received.

RE: Starting a drumming circle
Hi Moonfeather,
Drumming circles can be fun as long as you have understanding neighbours or warn them first so they can prepare themselves. If you have no neighbours to worry about even better.
Listed some ideas:-
I have found that the Bodhran drums can be found in antique come bric a brac shops and even sometimes in a charity shop at a reasonable price.
You could also rent a drum to visitors which will help your funding for future drums (just an idea)
I always bless the drum before I start to use it and ask it to assist and speak to me...
Have you tried Ebay, or the internet search engines for the U.K. to locate drums? or maybe you could put a wanted add in your local paper and see what response you get.
Sometime it is fun for people to create their own drum to start with, I once used a Large coffee tin with a plastic top and decorated the tin and beat the plastic. not a great sound but a drumming note was obtained from it and every one had a good time. Some used a plastic bucket and tried different sides and places to obtain differing sounds.
I wish you every success with the drumming circles, I always like to start with the heart beat rythmn it relaxes everyone.
Happy drumming,[sm=dance.gif]
RE: Starting a drumming circle
Hi Paul, thanks for your suggestions. I have a hall in mind for drumming so if I can hire that, we should be okay.
I had a look at Ebay but they weren't all that cheap... maybe try again. I like the idea of renting a drum though! And starting by creating one is a good idea too... I've found rice in a small drinks bottle works great as a rattle.
Hmm... maybe I should just get started and see what people want to do...
The heartbeat is another good suggestion... got a few folks interested so we'll see what happens!
Blessings

RE: Starting a drumming circle
Hi Moonfeather
Don't write off ebay - you just need to know when to buy;)
Keep an eye out for ones which end Mon/Tues/Wed morning especially - less people bid then so you can get a bargain - anytime earlier in the week is best as the weekends are a nightmare - even my dog logs on on Friday night:D
I managed to get a set of two drums recently for under a tenner so there are definitely bargains to be had!
