dont know if this is the right place for this or not but i saw someone mention smudge sticks..
is there a way to 'make' one? i know that you can buy them but does anyone have any good places to buy one or a way how to make them (or both). or just info on them in general. should care be taken if used around children? would incense do the same job?
again sorry if this is the wrong forum
RE: smudging
Hi octavia
Well I beleive you can make your own 'smudge sticks' but to be honest I usually buy mine...much quicker...
Yes always be careful when using them especially around children, you can buy special dishes in which to burn them ... but these can and do sometimes get quite hot.
You can usually get them from any good 'new ageish' shop and they usually come in the form of Sage & Lemongrass or Sage & Lavender and so on... there are many different types, so choose one that suits you.
Incense is good and can be used for many different things and although can be used for clearing will perhaps not be as effective (that is of course if you are referring to incense sticks) you can buy Francensence and burn that in a special burner on charcol...smoking the rooms out completely, but again being very very careful if children are around, and never leave any of them burning if there are animals around that could knock it of the table or wherever you have left it....
I must admit to only using it when it is just me in the house, as my husbund reacts to it ... and obviously this is not very nice for him...he's ok though once the 'clearing' has been done...all very powerful stuff but well worth it.

RE: smudging
I agree. It is easier to buy them. I would do as stormdeva suggested.
My favorite Native American store closed down so now I can't.
And since I have not found a place to purchase it via internet or a trip into the city, I make my own.
Where I live we have sage brush (not herbal sage) everywhere. It smells so lovely when burned.
I usually make mine in the spring when they are in the highth of their growing season.
But save yourself some time and get it at the shops.:) My favorite is sage and lavender cleansing and calming

RE: smudging
Incense does the same job though smudging is much better!
Yes it ok to be used around children just ask them to go to one room of the houe or even step out side for a bit.
Also remember to keep you front door open and work from top to bottom, as thats the way the current and energies work.
Good luck

RE: smudging
I have made one before by picking loads of sage from the garden, and wrapping string around it all then dried it for a bit in the airing cupboard.
RE: smudging
Hi,
Can anyone tell me how to do smudging? I have the sage, abalone shell and wand, but dont know the technique!! My house needs clearing/cleansing and I would like to try this method for a change.
Thank you,
Penny
RE: smudging
hi all, Smudge Sticks are powerful Medicine, as well they do burn really hot, the best way to extinguish them is dipping the end in a bowl of beach sand, believe me i have seen some disasterous results when you think they are out and you set it down....
RE: smudging
Hi Penelope, There are no right or wrong ways of smudging. Just set your intent, in this case, your intent will be to cleanse a room in your house, to remove any unwanted energies and replace with vibrant and harmonious energies. Then move the wand from one side of the wall to the other paying attention to any corners. You will get a sense when to stop, trust your instincts.
The abalone shell can be used to put out the sage, I've never had any problems putting it out in the shell, just check it has gone out fully.

RE: smudging
Hi Octavia,
I use loose leaf sage and braided sweet grass I also find it easier to extinguish. I also use an Abalone shell. I have also used a bowl (not plastic) with sharp sand in it and stood up the sage leaves and they burn down and extinguish themselves. I also use a smudge feather to spread the smoke into the areas required.
I find the sage and sweet grass properties work quite quickly for me.
Happy Smudging 🙂
Some info that may be of use:-
Californian White Sage
Cleansing, Purifying The home of Californian white sage (Salvia Alpine), a scrub plant with spiky flowers, is along the sun-washed coastline of Southern California. Sage is a cleansing and purifying herb and can be used to help break up feelings of negativity. Traditionally, it’s regarded as being able to open people up and bring about the ability to have a greater connection with the sacred world. Its properties make it ideal for use in cleansing and clearing ceremonies of people, places and objects, as well as for meditation or prayer. People wanting to build a closer spiritual connection may also benefit from burning or carrying the herb.
Sweet Grass
(Hierochloe odorata) can be found growing in the Plains of the United States, as well as in some areas of Alberta in Canada. It’s a distinctive green grass, being tall in stature with wide blades and a reddish tone at its base.
It’s got similar properties to sage, popularly being used as a purifier of places, objects and people to encourage positive energy and dispel old and negative vibes. It was often used in Native American sweat lodge ceremonies, where the sweet scented herb was sprinkled onto the hot rocks to improve the energy inside the lodge and fill the air with a sweet aroma.
Traditionally it was plaited into long braids – ideal for using during cleansing, prayer and smudging – and is still often found sold like that today. Belief has it that when sweet grass is burned, a prayer is sent to heaven on the smoke. Its properties make it ideal for using in quiet moments of contemplation, as well as when wanting to create an air of purification.

I love to burn copal resin as a deep cleanser. It is a resin and has been used in south america for centuries. You need a charcoal tablet to set it going and just a little goes a long way
