Hi

I am new here. Currently, I am taking a few weeks/months out from work, I used to teach. I got very stressed and eventually had to call time on things as for me it just wasn't the right thing to be doing anymore.

I feel as though I am going through some mid-life rite of passage. Everything appears to be slotting into place for me so easily at present. I feel I was forced to make the seperation from teaching - I lost my car so had to travel by train, then got a foot injury so I couldn't walk, then got a shoulder problem so I couldn't carry a bag. I was in so much pain - physically and mentally. Anyway - I now feel that I am in a transition period. I am doing voluntary work with blind people in the local community and hope to get involved in helping out at an eye clinic at the local hospital. I am definitely changing my direction in life more towards community and possibly medical/administrative work.

I know there are rites of passage, someone I know talked of a death rite. I am quite sure that this is not that, I am not ready for that yet - it sounded awful. I think there are others but nobody seems to be able to help me with them. I wondered if anybody could help me here. Just a direction to point me in, or a suggestion to material I could read. I am sure it is going to help me make sense of my life experiences.

Thanks for your time
Lexi

RE: rites of passage

hi lexi
it would seem that you are in the west of the medicine wheel..the looks -within-place

the west is connected with the dark, the night, the earth, even the fact that you are working with visually impaired people is linked to the west.

take a walk at sunset, intending to find a special stone, sit with your back against a tree, facing west, and gaze at the stone, asking what it has to tell you

Thanks for your advice tigress. I will try this meditation. I think the west maybe connected with water too. I moved to the seaside about a year ago and I feel really contented and happy here. I will let you know how I get on.

RE: rites of passage

As you recommended Tigress I took a walk yesterday evening at sunset and would like to share it. I decided to go to the beach as I often get inspiration from there. I set my gateway and my intention, to talk to a stone and be given information regarding another possible opening for me in life. I walked along an east/west line along the shore.

I hadn’t gone far when I sat down and just watched the sea. The waves were my first observation - hitting the beach sideways, watching the movement of the body of water as it came ashore, then being aware of it's fast rolling effect and the sounds. I felt I could feel the sea’s mood and could hear it’s voice; the more vigorous crashing and then the gentle whispering, ‘yessssss’. It seemed to be confirming to me I was in the right place.

I watched the seagulls skimming/hovering over the surface of the water. Diving down and quickly coming up. Subconsciously, I looked at the surface around me and picked up a very rounded stone. It had three or four levels like the contours of a hill on a map. It made me think of an island. I closed my eyes and was taken on a trip to a selection of islands above and under water; off the Atlantic coast of Mexico towards the Caribbean, the barrier reef and Pacific reefs. I saw a boat too which I was dozing in while the water gently lapped and rocked me.

A mixed race family walked by whilst I was working. They said hello and I greeted them back and I watched for a while as the Far Eastern father was teaching his son about the animals in the shells and advising him to put them back in the water.

I picked up another stone and shell. I picked them because they had markings on them that looked like eyes. I asked what they saw in the sea and on the shoreline and they told me dead plants/seaweed, murky/polluted waters, people who didn’t take care about the sea. I then picked up another stone which had markings like a turtle’s back. I remembered a holiday in Cyprus where I visited a turtle beach. It was an ecological site which they were trying to protect from the tourists. I then saw an old, dead, grey plant from the sea bed. I asked about the purpose of all this and I was told I had some role to play in working with sea plants to help protect the future of sea turtles and other sea animals. I asked about my vision and an ecological one was given to me respecting the earth and the web of life. The rock with the eye seemed to be telling me I needed to believe in my path more and stick with it.

At that moment, a pair of bull terriers came hurtling past. A bigger, black one and a brown and white female one. They were running together side by side but she was chasing, trying to bite the male dog’s neck. She looked like a right little hustler and wasn’t going to give up.

At the end, the sun appeared from behind the clouds and a path of light shone on the sea. It was a gentle, winding path. As the waves came in, the light spread to form a velvety golden, pinky surface.

Thanks for your suggestion Tigress. For the time being, I can send healing out to the ocean, support ocean charities and will work on resuming studies in ecology.

RE: rites of passage

Thanks for all your encouragement everybody. What it also brought up for me was the fact that I had started a second science degree with the OU. I have completed all my level 1 stuff and had hesitated on going on to level 2. Some of the courses I had done particularly the short ones were level1/2 and I did OK - they were about the oceans, mammals and marine biology. I am encouraged again! My partner has a job interview tomorrow - everything is crossed. If all works to plan I won't have to be so economically active and I will have time to volunteer and do simple scientific research. I will also be able to develop my other interests such as my shamanism and music.

All the best everyone

Hey - positive thinking - my partner got the job. Ever get the feeling that spirit makes things happen for a reason. I hit the barrier telling me not to carry on with teaching 4 to 5 weeks ago, I got the information from the journey I did at the weekend. Now I can begin to close down that part of my life and build my creativity and dreams again. A new life at 40!!!
