But (sniff), it's the spirits of the tea leaves I feel sorry for... what happens to them when the leaves are being submerged in boiling (almost water).... is it painful?
Intention has a lot to do with it. Tea is planted, grown, picked etc. with the intention that it will be boiled and drunk. I’ve never come across any spirit that objected to being eaten or drunk at the end of its body’s existence.
...this half-brick that will do the same job as a crystal - when the brick was split in two, does this mean that the spirit of the brick is only half of the whole spirit, or are they both separate, individuated spirits in their own right?
Both. Everything has a spirit. A brick or half a brick. This can get very complicated if you try to talk to all of them. – I liken it to trying to have a sensible conversation with everyone one the Circle Line in the rush hour. But if you have to talk to one, it can be done. I have a half-brick. Or at least, it started as a brick and has been sea-washed into a pebble. I found it on a local beach while I was pondering journeys to include in a workshop – ‘Shamanism in an Urban Environment’ – and now the spirit of the brick helps with that workshop.
One more thing - do you think it's possible for the 'unhappy' spirit of an over-ripe avocado (had to be binned, sadly) to be haunting my fridge? There's a funny smell in ther, and I can't work out where it's coming from!?
Must admit, not sure about this one. Except, I can’t see why it would be unhappy (see answer to first part).
no hard feelings on my part OK 😉

Are are you saying what you mean ? hehehe . .
Absolutely no hard feelings, there has never been any .. 🙂

Yes, I'm saying what I mean.... as far as I am Consciously Aware (hmn, scratch that complication - the Consciously Aware statement, I mean...hehe))
In summary: No hard feelings...
WildStrawberry, Nice_1 - isn't this a bit off topic?
Yes, I do appreciate that, Crowan. In the back of my mind I seem to remember you saying once that if people don't 'get' the shamanic idea of everything having a spirit (or words to that effect!) then there is no point in their considering shamanism as a possible path. I was initially drawn to it, but now think it is not for me - although I still find a lot of its aspects fascinating.
Yes, I did, didn’t I? I think, on reflection that I would mostly stand by that. If someone isn’t open to the idea that everything has a spirit I would question why they wanted to learn shamanism. On the other hand, I would still accept them on a workshop. If they had got to the level of more advanced work without believing this, I would ask them to ask their spirit teachers about it. I do know people who practice shamanism and who see clients who don’t believe it. I have come across people who don’t believe in spirits at all – who think it is all ‘in your head’ – who see clients and who teach workshops. I just don’t see how they do it. It seems to me to be like the chap I once met who considered himself a devout Christian but didn’t believe in either God or Jesus.
I’m not looking for converts. But please keep asking your questions. They are always interesting.:)
I can accept that everything has 'a spirit' as an abstract concept. For example, I think I can sense the 'character' and power of a crystal, or a tree. It's the translation of my understanding of the 'spirit' of an object, or living thing, into a form that can be seen that I find hard to accept. I'm thinking of the Boggle and the Honey Monster in your book, Crowan - that's when my scepticism kicked in!
I'm sorry that I feel this way, as I was very interested in shamanism when I first began reading about it, but as things stand it seems it's not for me! I'll still be reading all your posts with interest, though, Crowan. 🙂

(For anyone who hasn't read it - they are both house spirits) Is it a problem with they way we see them? (i.e. as usually basically humanoid or other animal?) Or is it the idea of something 'non-living' (like a house or a town) having a spirit?
It's the way you see them. I have no problem with a house, town or river having a spirit (although that would involve me having to accept that every droplet of water etc. etc. has its own spirit entirely separate to that of the river! ;)).
It's not as though the appearance of each spirit is different to everyone - you say (in your book) that your partner also saw the house spirits in the same form that you did. I could perhaps understand that a spirit would show itself to a human being in a way that chimed with that individual human's expectations, but not that it would just hang about looking like a, for example, black dog. That idea, to me, implies that such spirits are a bit too tricksy to be 'spiritual'.

Maybe the black dog is simply what that spirit has decided to look like.
I don’t understand the “too tricksy to be spiritual”. Why is looking like a black dog tricksy? And why should spirits not be tricksy?
Well, if some of them are, but you have to ask your own spirits to find out whether they are or not, it seems like a minefield! I have enough trouble in real life sorting out the bad guys from the good guys without having to do it in another realm!
(Why, then, would you trust the spirit of a Tarot card to tell you the truth...?)

I still don’t get why looking like a black dog is tricksy. And I think this only seems like a minefield because you’ve never journeyed. It’s not hard to ask your own power animal about something when it is with you anyway.
(Why, then, would you trust the spirit of a Tarot card to tell you the truth...?)
Why would I not? I’d already said that these are spirits that my friend has worked with closely. My own spirits have no objection to them.
Crowan,
Here's your response to kiga's post #39, you said:

Over on mouse's Symbolic dream thread, on the subject of power animals you said:
Shamanism has nothing to say about black panthers - or any other animal.
When you find lists of "power animal meanings" in books at best this is from one culture, at worst it is made up. Publishers know that it sells books.
Will you clarify?
Will you clarify?
What exactly is your question?

Oh, come on..........!

You quoted me twice and asked for clarification. I don't know what you need clarifying. I’ll answer if I can understand what you want answering.

BS. Never mind, Crowan. The faint interest I had in Shamanism has gone. You and little mousey are so similar, I can see why you've been harmonizing..
Bye.

I suppose rudeness is possibly easier than explanation. Luckily, there are people willing to make the effort.

I think it's the question of power animals that WS wanted clarification about, Crowan. It would seem that she mistakenly took your dismissal of 'power animal meanings' as being contradictory to your assertion that it's 'not hard to ask your own power animal something..'.
Just to be clear, I wasn't referring in my post to a black dog power animal, rather a house or other spirit taking on the appearance of a black dog (or fuzzy blob etc.). I suppose what I'm saying is that I'm not at all comfortable with the idea of spirits behaving in such a 'human' manner - not just in choosing their appearance, but being sulky, spiteful, etc. just to get their own way.
My mind is set, I have decided I'm too old to change the beliefs of a lifetime and, interesting as it has been, I think I'll bring my brief flirtation with shamanism to an end! Thank you for all your responses, Crowan! 🙂

As I said to you before little mousey, if you don't know what I mean - walk away from it.... scurry if you think it befitting for a little mouse....:D

Ha ha ha!! Not bad, I would give that one at least 10 points (and I hope you enjoyed my reaction too :))
(and I hope you enjoyed my reaction too :))
er...so so :D.
But, come on mousey, you're no little mouse. Plenty of people around here have gone to a lot of effort, trying to help you out over the past few months (seemingly to no avail ) - when you're more than capable of helping yourself. If you claim to not understand, or not know what I mean - so be it...... :);)

I think you are doing your best to wind me up by asking provocative and silly questions. Can we say game over now? I'm a bit bored, surely you are?
Thank you for all your responses, Crowan! 🙂
