[sm=nature-smiley-008.gif] Hi all, I'm on the early stages of my shamanic journey and I was just wondering how you all discovered yout totem animals?
I'm not sure if I'm doing things in the right way but I have looked around at the animal figures I have collected and been drawn to over the years and those I feel a real connection with. Then I have also seen animals in my dreams or just before I have dropped off to sleep. Every dream I have these days seems to contain an animal of some sort and I often have the same ones in my dreams although I don't quite know what they mean or are saying to me yet. They are:
Jaguar
Spider
Bat
Snake
Turkey
Dog and
Owl
Jaguar, spider, turkey and snake seem to be the main ones. How about you?

My gut instinct says you are on the right track - though I must admit I didn't go down that route.
Have you read any more about shamanism - I found I had to find out all I could about it and then the journeying became relatively easy - and indeed, finding your guides is something you really don't have to worry about - they are waiting there for you, waiting until you are ready!
The fact you are dreaming about animals is I think a clue - my first and primary animal came to me as a dream, though I had to journey to realise this - if you need help in journeying then just give me a shout and I'll do what I can.

like mab, i met one of my allies many years ago, in fact he used to appear in my dreams when I was very young.
I have met others over the years, including one who arrived to be in the team when I was training to do soul retrievals

I have met many of my guides over the years, I started by reading "The Way of the Shaman" by Micheal Harner, which is a great book to start with, I met my wolf through my first journey but always had dreams about being in a wolf pack so it was not a surprise when I met him. Dreams can be as powerful as jouneying and I am sure this is just the start for you to find your animals and spirit guides.
My advice will be to just go with the flow and take each dream as it comes, read as much as you can or enrol on a workshop if you have any in your area and have fun.

I never intended to become a shaman and discovered my totem animals (at least that's what I think they are :)) through my Reiki. Having said that I've always been drawn to the wolf all my life. On the other hand I love cats but I don't have the cat as a totem animal.
When first starting out on my Reiki, competely clueless I have to say, I met a number of animals. When I started researching their meaning on the internet it made perfect sense of why they had come into my life at that particular time. However, I do have two constant animal companions in addition to a number of other guides.
