Hello all [sm=wave.gif]

A couple of years ago I went on a 'drumming' w/end it was one of the most enliven things I'd ever done, the beat from the drums got to the very soul of me, since then all I've ever wanted was a drum of my own but have never had the spare cash to buy one.
Recentlywhilst visiting a local shop my son saw a double drumandthey just called out to him, so bless him ~ he bought them for me, and when my daughter visited a few weeks ago she brought them up with her.
As you can imagine I was elated and am now having great fun with them, I can't remember much of what I was taught that w/end but sitting in the garden banging the living daylights out of them is certainly a great way of relieving some of 'todays' stresses.

Any fellow drummers out there?

Many blessings
Kachina

RE: Drumming

Fellow drummer here... yes, I find great benefit from the drum! 🙂 I started with a bodhran and now also have a frame drum. Both have different tones and energies and it's fun to work with them. The thing I like most is to sit with the drum and listen to what it has to say instead of just getting stuck in there and'banging away'. It's wonderfulwhen they are happy and sing...

I also have a Kenyanchruch drum which I don't play very often since it's rather heavy for little me to hold up for any length of time!

RE: Drumming

I've wanted to do drumming for such a long time, now!

there'sa workshop by Dragonfly moonlight in the autumn here in the south west, so I shall be going!!

I once did a Taiko drumming workshop in Livingstone (Scotland) with Mugyenko group but sadly found I wasn't exactly in rythm with the others and could forget immediately the rythm I had to perform!!

anyhow...Mugyenko is a must-see-and-hear/see for any drum lover: it took me to another wordly level!

RE: Drumming

Hi again Fadette ... briefly this time on drumming, and sorry I nevercaught up with you on the drumming thread in the Somerset Regional/County forum.

Apologies also to Kachina for tardy reply here ... who did you do the drumming workshop with?

For others here, the linkto Dragonflymoon's website:

[link= http://www.dragonflymoononline.co.uk/ ]http://www.dragonflymoononline.co.uk/[/link]

When I went to Google for Mugyenko, I got asked if I had meant Mugenkyo, though there are results for both spellings. Their own website is unfortunately not available at the moment, something about exceeding bandwidth, and to try later. Here it is anyway:

[link= http://www.mugenkyo.com ]www.mugenkyo.com[/link]

Also at:

[link= http://www.african-caribbean-ents.com/Mugenkyo%20.htm ]http://www.african-caribbean-ents.com/Mugenkyo%20.htm[/link]

nice pix, but no music. There are loads of other sites featuring them if you do a search as I did.

And you're right here when you say:

anyhow...Mugyenko is a must-see-and-hear/see for any drum lover: it took me to another wordly level!

I haven't done workshops with them, but heard them in concert when I lived in Leicester. Unmissable!!! 😀

RE: Drumming

:DI canfeel your enthusiasm!!!

Perhaps if you bookmarkk their website, when they get it online again, you can see if they have some forthcoming workshops. Or maybe do a search, seeif they are publicised by events organisers.

There are also other Japanese drum ensembles, and I've heard several, again in Leicester, but I can't remember the names.

Now here's something I find very interesting ... I say I have heard them, and you say you can't wait to see them again! No doubt at all they are all visually spectacular, yet I find that the use of one sense can dominate another. At one of these concerts, I closed my eyes so as not to be distracted from what I was hearing, and even rammed my spine into the back of my seat to sense the vibrations also. I had to be woken from a trance as a result 😀

Now, the same thing in reverse. To African music now. Do you know The Drummers of Burundi? I bought their CD of the same name a few years ago (playing it now as I type), yet never attempted to drum along with them. Thereason is in this account of their music on Wikipedia:

[link= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Drummers_of_Burundi ]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Drummers_of_Burundi[/link]

Way too complex! Yet when THEY came to Leicester, and I SAW them in concert as well as hearing them, I was able to say to my companion of that evening: Ah, now I'veSEEN what they do, I can understand what I've been listening to.

You can hear some of their drumming here:

[link= http://www.sternsmusic.com/disk_info/RWMCD1 ]http://www.sternsmusic.com/disk_info/RWMCD1[/link]

Let me know what you think.

If I'm even justposting in a thread on drumming, never mindplaying or even listening, I can feel a change in my energy level .... upwards! 😀

RE: Drumming

read the bit on wikipedia and it looks very interesting. it all makes sense too, that drumming is a sacred part (medium?) of a sacred ceremony.

I also liked the short piece of drumming I could hear from the link you gave, shame i cant hear any other...I might order it someday.

what kind of drumming do you do?[sm=jump2.gif]

RE: Drumming

Thanks. The name is familiar but I haven't drummed with them ... yet! I just sent an email asking to be on their mailing list if they have one,and addeda link to this thread.;) I noticed from their website they held a gong event at Gaunts House in Dorset (not far from me at all) earlier in the year, which sounds fantastic.

I see also they will be at the beautiful Launde Abbey in Leicestershirein October. Wonderful place with its own little chapel. I led a drumming workshop there a few years ago for people with Aids, and another time did Reiki sessions for a group of women on retreat there.

Re-reading the thread, I found the Mugenkyo website is up and running again, link here to hear them:

[link= http://www.mugenkyo.com/l_gallery/mg02.htm ]http://www.mugenkyo.com/l_gallery/mg02.htm[/link]

And you get more than a measly half minute of drumming too! Well worth staying with it until the bell (or cymbel ?) comes in. Fabulous!!! 😀
