Does anyone know a good source of drum making materials i.e. hoops and rawhide please. I am guided to make my own drum but live in Ireland so it is difficult to get to workshops etc.

Thanks

RE: drum making

What a great idea. 🙂

Can't you find anything relevant on google? Otherwise, I suppose you could ask a drum manufacturer. Or someone who might have written a guide on making your own drum?

RE: drum making

Thanks Darrenfollowsthe path

I have searched extensively on Google but most materials come from America and carry huge postage. I will try and contact drum makers to see if they can help. I feel it really does have to be a drum a make myself, be so much easier to buy another ready made one!

Do you know Sacred Hoop magazine? You might find a supplier via them. The website is at:

Also try using HP's Search on 'drum making' ... there are a number of previousthreads, where members have posted re making drums, so may well be able to advise you.

PM me if further help is required.

RE: drum making

I saw a hide for sale on ebay recently, sold now but the seller is winkte339 and they can provide hides and frames. I haven't brought from this seller myself so this is information rather than recommendation.

Thanks

Thanks for all the advice. I have located several sources of kits and now just have to decide what to get or if to hold out for an actual rawhide skin which seems harder to find.

I couldn't access or find the ebay trader but I'll keep a look out.

I'm sure that when I'm ready something will arrive!:p

SPIRIT OF THE DRUM....by Marcine Quenzer

THE DRUM
Come my brother and sisters, come all children of our land,
come and sit by the village fire as the night closes around us.
Watch the flames push the smoke upwards toward Grandfather Sky.
Our hope is deep as we send these, the most silent of prayers to ride the smoke to the Great Spirit. The Drum beats softly......
Sit quietly all my people and hear the sound, hear the cracking of the fire,
the sound of family and friends, sharing their happiness.
The warmth we feel comes from this sharing of love not the fire.
Look closely into each other's eyes. What do we see? What is it, that is reflected back to us?
We see ourselves in one another and all that which has made us who you are. The Drum beats faster....

Close your eyes my family, and lisen to the wind as it stirs the flames higher.
Listen to the songs of our ancestors. They offer so much, all we need do is open your hearts to their words.
Only when we listen and learn from their wisdom can we grow as a people.
The Drum beats louder.....

Inhale the aromas around you, smell the sage burning, the food cooking in the pits, the deer hide that we wear the rain in the air and Mother Earth under our feet.
The Drum beat shakes the ground like buffalo running across the prairie......

Taste what has come to our lips. Taste the tears of joy that come from our eyes.
They are the tears of the past, present and the future.
Grandfather Eagle has given us a view of the future, and it is good.

Then we realize it is not the Drum that beats so loudly, but our own hearts coming together as one people under the Great Spirit, in Peace, Love and Harmony.......Finally.

I thought this was lovely to share.

I'm turning my garage (Unused and empty) into a workshop ...I've always wanted to make my own Bodhran drum and have been collecting hide bought from the e-bay. I've also been lucky enough to acquire a length of Yew ...suitable for a long-bow, which I also intend to make. Just waiting for the relevent books from the library which I have ordered. Not sure if the Yew wood needs to be seasoned though !!

Thanks for the links everyone.a great help indeed

Thanks

A belated thanks to all who offered advice. After much research I am in the process of getting frames and hide from Emma two souls who I see today has an ad on this site.

So far she has been so, so helpful and I am now looking forward to receiving the frames she is making for me and three friends as well as the hide of course.

I'll let you know how the drums turn out!

For anyone thinking of making their own drum I can now definately reccommend it. Thanks once agin for all those who suggested suppliers etc. I got everything from Emma twosouls on ebay who is registered as winkte339 if anyone else is looking. She also provided great instructions and support.

I loved being able to do the whole thing with friends from creating our own ceremony to helpingeach other learn. The drums are amazing and all sound great. They are all a bit different reflecting the differences in our energies, how much we tightened the hide and differences in the area of hide each drum used, which makes them more special.

This shows the back of my drum.
