Wonder if anyone has any ideas on the symbolic meaning of dragonflys. Believe this to be my new totem animal as having never thought of them before the following happened in the space of a week:

In chronological order:

a) got given a beautiful brooch by a friend: lovely bejewelled dragonfly.
b) the next day I found a dragon fly on my bed (alive!)
c) 2 days later I saw a huge illuminated flashing dragonfly as part of a park's iluminations
d) four days later (yesterday) I opened up a digital photo I had taken around a month ago. It was the first time I had seen it at a proper size and not just on the camera. To my surprise, on the grass in front of the lily pond I was photographing, I spotted a beautiful blue dragonfly which I had snapped without noticing.

Any ideas???

love light and laugher.

RE: dragonfly

Well this is funny as one of my totems is dragonfly and I spotted one zooming by like a B52 bomber (BIG suckers!) this morning on a walk...

Dragonfly is all about Illusion - self-illusion and glamour, in the main; the illusions we cast about ourselves to hide the truth of our existance. Their iridescent colours and ability to reflect and refract light and colour illustrate the power of illusion. Dragonfly also illustrates the power and movement of light in its fast flight and dazzling ariel feats. Their bright colours take time to develop, reflecting the idea that with maturity our own true colours are revealed.

Dragonflies inhabit two realms - air and water, so there must be expressions of the emotional and mental in those with it as a totem. You may have been very emotional and passionate in your early years but learnt to balance it with greater mental clarity and control as you got older.

With Dragonfly showing up, you may need some fresh air regarding something emotional; gaining a new perspective or make a change. Or are you neglecting your emotions, being too rational?

Dragonflies are very territorial. They will remain as a nymph for almost two years before tranformation, which can indicate a two-year period for your own personal transformation or change. Perhaps the ones you've been seeing point to this coming to fruition?

Dragonfly is a very adaptable insect. Main predators are frogs and birds -worth examining their traits also, espec. frogs, which also undergoes transformation. Dragonflies need the warmth and light of the sun - worth considering for yourself.

Dragonfly was once a dragon. Dragonfly says,'Let there be light'. Allow changes to happen in your life, if you are resisting them. The resistance is only an illusion. Be open to the brilliance of transformation and creative change.

Blessings

RE: dragonfly

Hi tinamay, I just love the Dragonfly, they are very special.
Here is some info for you

Blessings
Aleeshia

Illusion, the Power of Light

Dragonfly is the power of light.
The dragonfly inhabits two realms: air and water
and the influence of both these elements will be felt by Dragonfly people.
They will be emotional and passionate
during their early years (the influence of water)
and more balanced with greater mental clarity
and control in as they mature (the influence of air).

Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change,
the messages of wisdom and enlightenment; and the communication from the elemental world.
Dragonfly medicine beckons you to seek out the parts of your habits which need changing.
Call on Dragonfly to guide you through the mists of illusion to the pathway of transformation.
The number 2 is important to Dragonfly,
so think in terms of two year periods when you begin a change.
Dragonfly brings the light and color of transformation into your life.

RE: dragonfly

Thanks everyone - that is absolutely marvellous. Should have known I could count on some healthy pages folk!

What amazes me is that so much of it is spot on - I am at a transitional stage, coming out of a bad two year period and into a new stage (albeit with its own set of difficulties).

Over emotional and passionate when younger, now more settled is true and I espcially liked the warning (Moonfeather) about not becoming too unemotional or feeling resistance to change. Coming out of a very bad period has manifested in an absolute fear of any more change. So I find this part of the dragonfly's symbolism particularly poignant. As a result of what's been posted I'm going to try and ease up on the resistance to change.

I loved the stuff about elemental communication, Aleeshia. I have recently been renewing my interest in the elemental world and I love the fact that this might be a symbol connected to them and to communication from them.

The number two is also interesting - I feel as though I can set myself a task of being settled for two years but that after that I have to check in again and make radical changes if I need to (like many people I suppose, i am torn between not wanting to be stuck and not wanting to be unsettled).

Ithar - good to hear about your seeing one when you needed it too.

Am going to act on all your info and am going to call on the dragon fly and medidate on its qualities.

Thanks!

love light and laughter

I have an affinity with the dragonfly, too. Being a hiker, I have seen many of all colors and sizes, I just get mesmerized by them.
