Recently I've been trying to get a handle on card reading, crystal ball etc. Wikipedia suggests something like the following: “Tarot reading revolves around the belief that the cards can be used to gain insight into the past, current and possible future situations of the enquirer. Some believe they are guided by a spiritual force, while others believe the cards help them tap into a collective unconscious or their own creative, brainstorming subconscious.” I'd guess there'll be something similar for other forms of reading.
I'm not interested in the mechanism of readings but I'd like to hear what practitioners feel they are doing, the source of any information acquired. I'd also like to hear what enquirers felt about the readings they've had and where they thought any information came from. Additionally I'd like to learn what benefit practitioners feel they are providing and what recipients feel they received.
Plenty to go at!

I’m not a practitioner, although I have a set of cards. I’m not what you might call a ‘natural’ – it doesn’t flow and I have other, easier ways of having my questions answered. But I do have the cards read, about once a year, by a friend who also practices shamanism. I go to her (well, being strictly honest, partly because it is convenient and fun) because she does it in a shamanic way, connecting with the spirit/s of the cards and also her personal teachers and helpers, so the advice and help I get comes, not from her ‘intuition’, but from her spirits. I’ve had cards read in the past by people who do it conventionally, and have been completely underwhelmed by what they’ve told me.

"....connecting with the spirit/s of the cards" Would you please enlarge on what this means to you?

Shamanism is an animalistic belief system. That is, we believe that everything has a spirit. That includes tarot cards. Through the shamanic trance journey we can meet and speak with these spirits. My friend has spoken to the spirits of her cards and they have agreed to help her.
I'm a bit bemused by your response, Crowan.
Why would the spirits of certain Tarot cards give any more insight into your past/present/future than any other spirit which you could ask yourself? I find it odd that a Shamanic practitioner would give or acccept 'readings' in this way.

Yes. Fair enough. She’s a friend. It gives her a bit more income. It’s fun. But I wouldn’t ask her if she didn’t work shamanically.
Sometimes, though, it’s good to get the opinion of other people’s spirits. Usually, of course, I’d just ask a friend to ask his/her spirit teachers.
Why can't you just ask your own? I don't understand why, if you implicitly trust your own spirit helpers, you would want the opinion of someone else's.

Sometimes, even if I'm pretty sure of what I think, I'll ask other people's opinions - to maybe be told something that hadn't occurred to me, or to get a different perspective. It's sometimes the reason that I ask questions on HP. I ask other people's spirits for the same reason. Not just anyone's spirits, but with close friends, I have known their spirits for many years. For example, I have a friend whose main teacher almost always disagrees with my main teacher. If my teacher advised me to do something and her teacher advised something else, I would go by what my teacher said. But I might well talk to him about what my friend's teacher had said and find out the reasons for the disagreement - this gives me another perspective and helps me to learn. Some of my friends' teachers are beings that I regard as friends of my own. I've known them for a long time. And, of course, if I need healing then I have to trust them. They are all different with their own personalities, so I would choose who to ask based on the teacher as well as my this-reality friend.
Do you think we should shift this to the shamanism forum?

I've read since I was 16, for friends and myself. Sometimes have been very accurate! Never charged for it, don't believe in that for me. I feel the cards represent energies that are best described as the collective unconscious, i.e. this is the nearest fit but it's a bit deeper. There is also something to do with time I feel, as if they enable you to perceive it in a less linear richer way. I believe that their psychological / archetypal aspects have to be felt quite deeply in order to do the what-is-going-to-happen stuff.
Your take on Tarot reading is similar to my own, mouse - I believe the intuition comes from within and from the wider realm which we can access at certain times. The problem I have with Crowan's response is that she implies that she takes the 'reading' from the spirits of the actual cards.
I have a set of cards and have spent some time learning - including having a very good teacher for an hour every week for almost two years a few years ago. I hardly look at them now.
For me, I think that the greatest benefit has been the understanding of how there are different stages to everything - and that how I or anyone else might be feeling in relation to anything is probably more related to the stage of the process than anything else: think about the energy of the ace at the beginning of a project, moving through to heaviness of 7, 8 and 9 before you reach ten and begin a new cycle.
This has really helped me to see the world with a different pair of eyes and to know how better to respond to other people when they are speaking about things that are bothering them.

Which is a problem because ...?

"Do you think we should shift this to the shamanism forum?" absolutely! 😮

"It gives her a bit more income. It’s fun." It's for entertainment then?

It's counselling, then....?

thank you....

Sometimes. Which is not to say trivial. It can be fun and also taken seriously.

OK but we digress.

I saw your main question as this:
"I'm not interested in the mechanism of readings but I'd like to hear what practitioners feel they are doing, the source of any information acquired".
Does my reply really not give any explanation of this at all?

May I respond by asking you to read what you wrote (copied below)....

Now tell me, if you would, where you've said what you feel you do and where any information you might acquire comes from.
It seems quite clear cut to me what mouse meant, mac. I'm sure she'll respond herself, but I wonder why you're being so hostile.

Blimey! This is a bit full on isn't it? I feel like I am answering an exam question, better be careful 🙂 If I feel that the "cards represent energies that are best described as the collective unconscious" I would suggest that by attempting to read the cards I am trying to access these energies. So that is the what I feel I do part (hopefully). And, I guess that is where I think any information I might acquire comes from. If that still isn't clear, you'll have to give me a D-

Thanks - that wasn't hard was it? 🙂 And you weren't offended were you?
