I have no idea if it has anything to do with my dream or not. Yesterday I had forgotten to pay for the cable, so today it was disconnected. It led to a very unpleasant conversation after which I had gone to sleep because I was still tired.
I don't normally dream in color or maybe I just don't remember there being color in the dream. I have no idea what time of day it was in the dream. The entire dream was very stressful and frustrating. Here is the dream I had (I don't remember all the details.) There has been an alien invasion. Aliens would attach to a human body and take control of it (I don't watch these kind of movies, so I don't think I was influenced by that.) At some point in the dream I was bitten by something and had a bump on my arm. The bump was clear and looked like there was something under the skin. I was later able to remove and and destroy the thing. The rest of the dream I was unsuccessfully trying to save the world.
Fascinating things dreams.
Most are regurgitations of ripples not only in individual mind but also in collective mind.
Even if you don't watch and read such stuff, the Ether is full,of ideas about aliens, alien invasions, attaching to human hosts and so on
On another very private level it is the alien ness of our existence, under the control of conditioned mind...which literally gets under our skin and grows a pseudo identity, totally controlling and high jacking life. This entity, the conditioned mind being foreign in origin and functionality and keeps one separated from one's true self.
Removing that 'alien' allows us to become human again...
Breaking the hypnotic control and setting oneself free
Saving the world is always an unsuccessful pursuit, as you mention it. There is only oneself to save. In saving me is the entire world saved...paradoxically....obviously
Dreams come from the creative layer of the unconscious mind, an area that is not wired into the higher functions of speech and reasoning. Meaningful dreams are the unconscious trying to pass a message to the conscious mind using the only tool it has - symbolism.
Most of the message is from the personal unconscious; but, as Jnani said, there may be an element of the collective unconscious present (and the more you have psychic gifts, the stronger the collective influence is likely to be). But generally the first question is "What is my personal unconscious trying to tell me?"
If I had that dream, I would be asking myself what anxieties or repressed material do I have in my unconscious that my ego fears would take me over (turn me into the kind of person my ego fears to be)? What is this repressed material that is alien to my ego self?
Unlike Jnani, I would say this your authentic self trying to break through the ego defences of the false self.

I have been trying to figure it out for a long time now, but had not yet found an answer to that. Sometimes I think that I don't want to know.

I don't feel like I broke free from anything. I don't really feel any different than I did before.

Didn't say that you did or want to break free from something.
It is just how our deepest running bondage to conditioned mind popping its head up.
I generally advice against reading too much into dreams....unless the connection is staring you in the face and has made itself known instinctively.
The best way to interpret dreams is....to put on the kettle and be awake enough to enjoy that hot tea

Indeed! Something many (most?) therapists don't tell you is that self-awareness is a Pandora's box. Once you open it, all sorts of things come out - including ones you may not want to face. Simple rule of thumb: if your life is functioning well, don't go there!
