Hi All .
As an individual that dreams a lot, it just kinda felt a bit odd when I was aware of last nights dream where a silver car was a drift within a torrent of water .
I saw the car smashing up upon a concrete wall / jetty that ran down one side of the river .
What the odd bit was that I heard the car smashing into the jetty . It was similar to surround sound (lol) ...
I would say that the majority of my dreams contain no sound . The dreams that do are normally when I find myself conversing with another individual that I do not consciously know, but these are more like thoughts that one has within one's mind (if you get me) and not so much as an external sound ....
Does anyone have dreams where they hear sound that is other than the sound of one's own or another's voice?

I was meditating once (bordering on dreaming if you think of it as Yoga Nidra) ... and I heard an Indian lady's voice say : "Ayisha" - judging by the tone (loving and welcoming) of her voice she was a grandmother type figure, and was associated with the right hand side of my body (if I remember correctly).
At almost the same time there was a male, grandfather type voice (gentle and welcoming) associated with the other side of my body, but I don't remember what he said.
Both voices seemed to come from a high place - they were definitely 'physically' above me, speaking down to me in a very loving manner... and had a "You've found us (or rediscovered) us, welcome! " kind of intonation them.
There were a couple of other meditation experiences where the was sound coming from physically 'outside' of me - if that's what you mean by surround sound, daz?
i had a dream once, where I was lying in bed and could hear the postman putting a ladder up to my bedroom window to deliver my post!
I woke up to find a burglar squatting on the windowsill shining a torch into my bedroom!!!!

I think there are many levels of awareness had within dream states and similar states to that which you have mentioned W.S. I would say that within those states communication on some level is being had . Some communications had can sound like a thought and as you have mentioned some communications can seem more like a direct physical voice .
In reference to the meaning of my post was more to do with sounds that are not voice orientated . Say for instance one dreams of being in a jungle, does one in the dream hear the birds, the monkeys, the insects ...? It just seemed different that I had heard the crashing of the car upon the jetty in my dream for I don’t normally recall such sounds other than those connected to communications being had . .
Great experience you had by the way W.S.

OMG Derek! What did you do - I hope it didn't get nasty. You could've grabbed a mirror and reflected the torch beam back!

I'm not sure, daz. was the crashing sound in sync with the actual crash.... I mean, was the sound joined to the action - or heard as a separate entity - like a sound track (don't know if that's significant?)...
I always dream in sound and colour - I thought everyone did!

With apologies to Nice 1 for diverting your thread, I said, 'Hello,' as you do, and he scarpered!

Hi Kiga. ..
What external sounds within your dreams do you hear other than that of communications ?

Yep, the sound was of the impact ..
Perhaps it wasn't a dream? Perhaps an aspect of self was observing something of the physical world . .

Yes I certainly do get sounds in dreams - things like music, and sounds that are immediately relevant to the situation (e.g. sounds of a car or a machine, etc), I do remember reading that external sounds commonly trigger off particular dream themes - e.g. if you hear an ambulance or a fire engine siren in your sleep it is not unusual for the sound to be incorporated into the dreamscape, with a relevant story emerging.
So we might not know whether the sounds we experience in the dream are intrinsic to us or have been triggered of by something we heard in our sleep (unless it is something very unusual.. however thinking about it, if the walls are thin enough you can potantially get pretty much any sound from your neighbours' television, from something like a roar of polar bear to aliens landing!)
Did a quick google search and came across this page with some examples of sounds in dreams (though I don't particularly pay attention to the interpretation of these, as it has been discussed on HP already dreams are highly individual and can only be interpreted in the person's own unique context) [DLMURL] http://www.meaningofdreams.org/dream_themes/soundsdreams.htm [/DLMURL]

''So we might not know whether the sounds we experience in the dream are intrinsic to us or have been triggered of by something we heard in our sleep'' ..
Thanks Masha for your input ..
In certain instances I would say that is true .
I remember dreaming of a lorry crashing into my bedroom last year and as I awoke from the dream at the moment of impact I was having my house shook from an earthquake lol . ..
It felt as if a lorry was passing through my bedroom ..

...so it seemed as though you were having a precognition?
Hi Kiga. ..

Hi Daz,
I hear voices, sounds such as water running or a car revving - snatches of music or indeed someone singing (can't be coming from within the house as everyone asleep!).
My first vivid memory of a dream was one I had when I was about 4, there was a witch (pointy hat kind) coming into the room and I was hiding behind the sofa, and as she swept in there was an ominous blast of music (a bit like the opening to the 1812 Overture). I was convinced the next day that it had all been real!
Just answering original question - yes, have heard music in dreams a few times. Not songs/tunes I recognise, it's more like some kind of musical communication.

It's possible W.S. although previous precognitive dreams had thus far are without sound .. Perhaps there is a difference in seeing something happening in a vision and actually being present in the future observing .. ?
can't say for sure ... (yet) lol .

That's interesting kiga - thanks for sharing . Mouse16 mentioned music / singing also .
It's funny that you mentioned a car revving .. I had a dream last week where I was on the race track putting my foot down on the gas, I could feel the adrenaline, I had a sense of speed, and yet no sound .. .hahah

Thanks for sharing mousey ... 🙂 ..
That's interesting that you relate the music to a form of communication .
I get tones .. can't really call them melodies as such lol . . but they wake me at night, It seems as if they are outside of my head so to speak ..
I feel they are a kind of communication .. (kinda off world stuff) ..

Yes, had that once before falling asleep, just when drifting off. It really frightened me! Definitely external but not from 'around' if you know what I mean 🙂
Hi Guy's . .
I love it when a question that is on one's mind is met by an answer to it (personally speaking)
Well last night in my dream state I was somewhere in america, don't ask me where (lol) well I was aware that there where fields of corn and there was a gathering of sorts within these fields .
Well my attention was drawn to the sky where I saw a huge flash of lightning . I then watched (from an observation point that was seemingly similar to a window ledge to which I was on the outside?)
Then the loudest crack came from the skies as the thunder began to express, so I was at this point in awe of the sheer beauty and power of the storm . This seemed to go on for a few minutes as I continued to watch the movement and the formation of the clouds and the sky being illuminated by the array of flashes etc ...
It still didn't seem the same sound quality for use of a better word to the dream about the car crashing in the river, I think that there are so many conscious levels / states that one can experience and what one is aware of within these various states I would say will be reflected in what is seen, felt, heard etc, etc ...

I have really noisy dreams and if I wake up immediately after I am always surprised at how quiet everything really is! I have music playing, I even sing & play the piano in my dreams(I can't actually play the piano btw). I've had orchestras, brass bands and in one dream I was playing piano in a concert hall!
I also get other noises and they are not ones that are actually happening for real outside as where I live is relatively quiet at night - I've heard sounds of aircraft, cars, trains etc.

Hi meurighj 🙂
I'm guessing that you're enjoying yourself singing, playing the piano and being generally musical in your dreams... it does sound like a lot of fun! Maybe....JUST MAYBE!!! Your dreams are trying to tell you, and encourage you to express yourself with such lyrical vigor in your waking life - HINT.
Why not look into it?

I remember many years ago I had a dream where I was watching a woman playing the piano and she was singing away (lol) I didn't hear the sound of the singing or of the piano but I remember asking this woman who are you? and I heard her say ''I am Violet'' ..
When I described this lady to my mum & dad and said the name violet .. they said you plonker that's your nan .. heheh 🙂
My nan on my dads side passed away when I was two years old and she used to play the piano and have a good old sing song as they did back in the good old days ..
