This week I saw the movie National Treasure based on the Templers, I did some research and they have an interesting past and possibly some lost treasure.
RE: Templers
Hi jbarry
Yes there is a masses of information on the Templars out there. Some of which is historical and other mythical. The best books I have found are, Malcolm Barber - Trial of the Templars; Karen Ralls - The Templars and the Grail ; Lyn Picknett and Clive Prince - The Templar Revelation; Piers Paul Read - The Templars. The List goes on. Dan Brown also picks up on them in the Da Vinci Code. There is a lot of speculation as to whether they were guardians of the Holy Grail, whether they were privy to arcane secrets or whether they indeed discovered treasure. Apart from the myths, they were probably the greatest disciplined fighters of their time (akin to the SAS of today) and were the founders of modern-day banking as they introduced the promissory note when travelling between European cities - so much safer than carrying large bags of money. They were only answerable to the Pope and their great wealth caused a good deal of jealousy - especially with King Philip the Fair of France, who found a great excuse of believing they were conducting heretical rites - so he had them routed out and tortured.
I have heard about this film but presume you are in the US as I don't know when the release date is over here. Did you like the film?
Regards
RE: Templers
Hello
Would love to see the movie, if it doesn't make it over here do ya recon we might be able to order the vid/dvd from states? As far as lost treasure goes, I am sure it is not LOST but deliberatly hidden. There was and still is alot of power and secrets held by this organisation. They still continue but obviously not as Templars. Ive heard many of the free-masons (lodges) hold these secrets close to them.
Sue, you seem to have tons of info on the knight Templars. There is alot of contradiction out there too. Do you happen to know anything about Rosslyn chapel in Scotland. It was built by the Templars. Also have you heard of Michael Scott. Somehow these two tie in but not sure how. One more group I am wondering if you have heard of, School of night. John Dee,
Sir walter raleigh ect, I also know there is a connection with the above to the seven. Can ya help. I may open new thread if you don't know but as they all tie in thought it a good opportunity to ask. Hope ya don't mind mod.

RE: Templers
Hello Jenny
Wow! Such a great subject and so many threads to look at![:-]
Well, I don't pretend to know that much after the last Templar Grand Masters were burnt at the stake in 1314 although of course that isn't the end of their story. Many disappeared to Scotland and from what I have read, they coded up all their secrets into the masonry at Rosslyn (a great book on this subject is Rosslyn - Guardians of the Secrets of the Holy Grail by Tim Wallace-Murphy and Marilyn Hopkins). After that, my knowledge on them tends to wane. It is interesting that you make a connection between Sir Walter Raleigh and John Dee both of whom I believe made the same journey to the New World on some secret orders of Elizabeth I (and I may be totally off tangent here but I think the Roanoke Expedition may have a had a part to play). I shall look forward to sifting through my books and going down to the library to see what I can find out. Don't know about Michael Scott (Rohan?) did he write books on templar secrets and the New World?
The Templars were ostensibly seen as a great fighting force to be reckoned with but that was also a cover for an "inner circle" of rites and secrets that we'll probably never know about, but it's great fun trying to find out.
Another important book that traces their flight from Europe after the execution of Jacques de Molay is the Temple and Lodge by Baigent and Leigh - this may answer some questions you have on the foundations of Freemasonry and its presence in US.
Hope some other HPers can join in this subject and throw some light on their history.:) I would love to know more about the Raleigh expeditions and any connection with Templars.

RE: Templers
It was just released 11/20/04, It was entertaining(Nic Cage), sort of an Indiana Jones movie. My wife and I liked it
RE: Templers
One common, though unproven tale of the Templars is their rallying in Scotland after the destruction of the order in Europe and in England. Scotland's self-proclaimed King, Robert the Bruce had been excommunicated by the pope for rebellion against his liege lord Edward Longshanks of England. Bruce needed heavy cavalry and skilled knights. The Templars needed a base where the pope could not reach them. A marriage of necessity.
It's probable some did make their way there. If they took any treasure, it was never found. Most of the Templar lands eventually passed to the Knights Hospitallers. The names "Temple"and "Spittal"are found aeound Scotland. Anyone interested should also visit Kilmartin in Argyll, where there are several graves in the Templar style, using a crusader sword as a cross.
It has been said that a group of Templars fought with Bruce at Bannockburn, when he defeated the army of Longshanks' son, Edward the Second. It's a good story, but there's no proof that it ever happened.
Rosslyn Chapel is an interesting building, undergoing major reroofing when I last visited a year ago. It's been very damp for years. There is a legend about a pillar carved by an apprentice mason. The work was so exquisite that his master killed him in a fit of jealousy. Again, no evidence.
What is true, is that Dolly the Sheep was born (if that's the word) , at the Roslin Institute, just up the road.
RE: Templers
That's interesting Sam. I think there is quite a bit of proof that the Templars fought alongside Robert the Bruce and that they were quite safe from the Pope in Scotland. The name Sinclair is derived from the french St Clair - after the name of a Templar knight who supposedly took several regiments to Scotland. Also, the English King (Edward) was loathe to send the Templars to France to be persecuted as he didn't believe that they had done anything wrong (and of course Philip the Fair was his arch enemy) - our English laws didn't include persecution of heretics in early Medieval times - that's why the Inquisition never had any sway over here.
It is interesting about Roslyn and is it true that excavation works are still be halted due to Rome not allowing them to take place (scared of what they might find?).
National Treasure opened over here yesterday and I hope to go and see shortly.

RE: Templers
The History channel here in the states had a very good program called Beyond the Davinci code, it had some very indepth look at both sides of the book and alot of information about the Templars history. I saw about the last 2/3's of it but I will be looking for the rerun. If you visit the History channel website they will probably have some more information and I believe they sell the program at a inexpensive price.
RE: Templers
When I was in St John Ambulance once of the members was hot on the Templars and he dicovered that St John Ambulance was a descendent of the St John chaper/order of the Templars.

RE: Templers
Hi MC
I think the St John's Ambulance was more a descendent of the Hospitallers (or the Order of the Hospitallers of St John is I think the proper name). They were in the Holy Land during the crusades with the Templars and had some very well manned garrisons like Krak de Chevaliers. They worked alongside the Templars although in some areas they were in direct conflict. When the Templars were dissolved, some of them joined the Hospitallers. They were never thought to be heretical like the Templars but then they didn't have the same wealth that everyone seemed to be after.
Hugo: I saw that there was an article in the Fortean Times. I have never actually bought this magazine, what is it's angle and is it worth buying?

RE: Templers
A great book about the templars is Umberto Eco's book "Foucault's Pendulum"
RE: Templers
Might recommend "The Book of Hiram" - Christopher Knight and Robert Lomax.
I have mentioned the relationship between Templars and Free Masons to somebody I know is a Mason - I was shot down in flames!
H'mm. Methinks they did protest too much.....

RE: Templers
Oh now surely not;)
The connection is well documented - I agree - like Gertrude, they protest too much.Gxxxxxxxx
RE: Templers
Perhaps because they don't want to be seen as part of the whole conspiracy ethos?
The book that I would most recommend is Rex Deus by Tim Wallace Murphy, Marilyn Hopkins and Graham Simmands. I met Graham when I went to Rennes le Chateaux in 2002 (was it that long ago ? ) - a very interesting and educated man. According to Tim though, Graham had no involvement in the actual writing of the book, even though his name appears on the cover! Can't fathom that one out.

RE: Templers
Unlocking DaVinci's Code Mystery or Conspiracy is out in the UK £5.99 and includes the Templars and Roslyn Chapel etc. I must admit I have not been drawn to read much in this area but did enjoy the Hiram Key, light holiday reading.
I must admit I did not realise that the original templars were monks and some have the theory that the Cathars came out of the Templars and that when the Cathars were killed 4 of them escaped with the secrets. The DVD also mentions the secret society that included DaVinci, Issac Newton, Botticelli and Victor Hugo.
It also includes an interesting discussion about the picture of the 'Last Supper' by DaVinci and the hidden symbolism held within it.
This DVD is a good taster for those that are not sure whether they wish to invistigate further. I must admit i was hungry for a lot more, wheting my appetite was not enough. Looking forward to seeing the full film to be released of Dan Brown's Davinci's Code.

RE: Templers
Hi All. Were the Templars the crusadingmonks that went to the Holy Lands? Were there more then one "band" of fighting monk knights? I ask because we have a castle here (in Cyprus) that was built and defended by crusading monks but I've forgotten which and I'm too lazy to look it up now...love, beej
RE: Templers
Yes Beej. Templars, Hospitallers, and the German Teutonic knights as well except the Teutons spent almost all their time subjugating their non Christian neighbors in Europe(the unfortunate Pruss)so as to steal their land. If you should ever holiday in Greece, the city of Rhodes, on that island, was fortified by theKnights Hospitaller after their defeat in the Holy Land and their architecture is all over the island, along with their distinctive cross. Rhodes has a medieval wall around it. After they got punted from Rhodes by the Moslems they ended up on Malta.[link= http://www.chivalricorders.org/orders/smom/maltaisl.htm ]http://www.chivalricorders.org/orders/smom/maltaisl.htm[/link]
RE: Templers
I liked National Treasure, good movie. If you like Spanish horror films, de Ossorio's "Blind Dead" films also revolve aropund the Templars. Most were made in the 1970's.
Jim Marrs also mentions the Templars in his book "Rule By Secrecy." It is fascinating history to read and how it plays into some conspiracies held nowadays.
RE: Templers
There was this show on channel 42, I can't remember what it was called, but it was about discovering the secret archeological truths, and it is a quite recent show. The host is a young man, dressed like Indiana Jones. On one segment he travelled around the world in search of the holy grail. One theory is that the Templers had tooken it from the Cathars. They had found an ancient Templer tomb in the undergrounds of a city (the name I can't remember, ill look it up). The problem was they arn't aloud to open it (for another reason I have to look up).
This just goes to show you a grail could be somwhere, just like some amazing things could be under the dome of the rock.
Peace
Cody
RE: Templers
Thank you, Nuck. I've only just seen your reply. I've actually been to Rhodes, but only for a few hours. I didn't take in much of the history. Next time I'll know what to look for. beej
RE: Templers
I believe the holy grail can be found, I feel alot of things could be unearth in 2006.

RE: Templers
I overheard a conversation at the weekend at our local pub - Angel hotel Grantham. Barman said the hotel was a regular haunt for the Knights Templar!
RE: Templers
probably just a ploy to get peolpe to go to the pub do u know the owners wink wink lol:P
RE: Templers
No its not a ploy! Its the oldest hostelry in the country... hang on i'll get the history - [link= http://www.angelandroyal.co.uk ]www.angelandroyal.co.uk[/link]
Some say that the old Angel has more historical interest than many of our Stately Homes in the United Kingdom . Widely regarded and fondly known as the oldest surviving English Inn, the main façade of the building that stands today was built approximately 600 years ago. The site then however had already been an Inn for 200 years and was built as a hostel for the chivalrous Brotherhood of the Knights Templar. It was then that the beautifully carved building caught the eye of King John "he of Magna Carta fame" who decided it would make a suitable location for a visit of his Royal Court in 1213.
An Angel was a common Medieval Sign that reflected the early connection between religious establishments and a travellers hostel. The Inn was extended in the mid 14th Century and again in the 15th Century
