I knew very little about the Mayan Calendar but watched a programme about it with great interest. Such a clear explanation of how it works and I was totally captivated with some of the information, he goes into the past, that the big bang was 16.4 billion years ago according to the calendar, and then all the stages 'we' went through to get where we are today and then of course we get to the bit that the calendar ends in 2012 (info I have seen on another programme (can post the link if anybody has interest), is that some mathmatitian played around with the I Ching and came up withj the same date!) Would like to still check some of the facts for myself but in general, a real worthwhile watch.

It is on a Dutch Website but the video is in English - it is rather long as there is a part 1 and 2 and both are 1 and a half hours long.

Would be interesting to hear what other have to say as Ancient Mysteries are a bit of a mystery to me!

Mayan Calendar

HI Jobelle - I have some knowledge about the Mayan 2012 prediction (over the years, various sources) and this is the first time I've heard of this bizarre mathematician "prank"! Would like to hear where this info is from.

It isn't just the Mayans that predict something massive happening in December 2012 - it squares up astrologically too. I suggest you look further into this.

the first time I've heard of this bizarre mathematician "prank"!

Not sure if you are referring to this whole programme or to my bit about the mathmatitian and the I Ching?

Futher to your post, I actually did come across something about how it astrologically square up to on another programme while I was looking into all this. It seems there will be some planetary alingment that only occurs once every 25 000 years and this happens in 2012 - seems nobody has any idea how this will affect gravitational forces on the earth etc. Can't remember offhand which the planets were (Other than the earth and the sun!). I Think this can do with some further investigation - also just heard about Planet X - seems facinating as well and as it seems to be coming towrads us, maybe has something to do with 2012 as well??

If you want to see more on the mathematical bit, it is in this programme - all about predictions made about the 'end' of the earth. Apologies as it is broken up in 10 minute sections and there are thus 5 'episodes' to watch, but in here they explain the bit about the mathmatitian and the I Ching:

I have to wonder how much we will see the end of the earth and how much it has to do with changes within us? or in the world? Seems to me the more you look into this, the more confusing and contradictory it becomes. After all, how many times has the end of the world been predicted and we're still kicking around.

Still, having said that, I found the Mayan calender totally amazing - to think of the knowledge these people had so long ago, how it was applied to their lifes - suppose the same goes for the people who built the pyramids!

🙂 I leave with a smile but much confusion  - can't even spell the word but I'm sure you get the drif!

First, let me say that I think that it is very important not be afraid of what the future holds. Prophecies can be a bit scary and they can easily consume us. IMHO, it is best just to love now, and let tomorrow look after itself.

That being said, there is no Mayan prophecy that states that the world will come to an end on 21 December 2012. Many texts, movies and TV documentaries are just cashing in on the popularity of the hype surrounding the myth and dis-information concerning this date. Especially, since it is getting closer.

However, 21 December 2012 has been calculated as the date the Long Count calendar, used by the Maya, completes its 13th B'ak'tun cycle since the calendar's starting point. The starting point having been calculated to be equivalent to 11 August 3114 BC in the Gregorian calendar.

To give just a little background to the Mayan Long Count Calendar, consider the following:

1 day = 1 K'in
20 days = 20 K'in, also called 1 Winal
360 days = 18 Winal, also called 1 Tun
7,200 days = 20 Tun, also called 1 K'atun (approximately 20 years)
144,000 days = 20 K'atun, also called 1 B'ak'tun (approximately 400 years)

So every 144,000 days is one B'ak'tun.

According to the Maya there will be a B'ak'tun ending on 21 December 2012.

This is a significant event being that it is the end of the 13th, 400 Tun period. According to the Maya, after 13 B'ak'tuns, or an era of 5,125 years, the cycle repeats itself, going back to counting 13 more B'ak'tuns.

On 22 December 2012 it will be the beginning of the second 13 B'ak'tun era of 5,125 years, with the starting of a new B'ak'tun of a 400 Tun period, but not the end of the world.

The equivalent ending dates of the last 12 B'ak'tun cycles on the Mayan Long Count calendar were:

11 August 3114 BC (beginning of cycle)
13 November 2720 BC
16 February 2325 BC
21 May 1931 BC
23 August 1537 BC
26 November 1143 BC
27 February 748 BC
3 June 354 BC
4 September 41 AD
9 December 435 AD
13 March 830 AD
15 June 1224 AD
18 September 1618 AD

There is an incomplete inscription on a B'aakal Emblem Glyph on a Stela at the Mayan city of El Tortuguero in Chiapas, Mexico that records the equivalent 21 December 2012 B'ak'tun ending date.

The date is also found carved on the walls of the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque, where it functions as a base date from which other dates are calculated.

However, Maya Stela occasionally show dates beyond 2012.

For example, in the Mayan city of Tikal, there is a Stela with the date equivalent to 21 October 4772 AD. The Mayan King called Pacal, of the city of Palenque predicted that on this date, the 80th Calendar Round anniversary of his accession will be celebrated, suggesting he did not believe the world would end in 2012, but continue at least until the year 4772.

Wow Historian, seems like you know a lot about a whole lot of things. Can now see where your name comes from! Thank you for taking all the time to explain this. I agree with you that we should not be afraid of what the future holds - and yes, we often forget to enjoy the here and now - maybe need to take my awareness there more often!

The interest I have in this is more from a 'Wow, weren't those Mayans advanced' point of view and not a 'goodness let's get ready the world is going to end'!!! Interesting that the calendar in Tikal actually goes till (at least) 4772, makes what they worked out so far in advance even more impressive!

Think I have some more reading to do this late Saturday evening........

Some quick comments to Jobelle:

I didn't find time to see the video, but surely the Mayans didn't have a calendar dating back to the Big Bang (often now called more of a Holy Hum). Think you got that wrong somewhere. As for Planet X ... I've come across it several times ... in 1950s science fiction! Apart from that, forget it.

Scientifically, in mainstream science, planetary alignments would be thought to have very, very little gravitational effect on us. Only the sun and the moon really have a major effect - gravitationally.

I wouldn't tend to see anything special about the year 2012 per se. I mean that nothing weird or wonderful will happen on December 21-22. It's just a general date, indicating a supposed general (gradual) change.

Thanks Jobelle - have watched all the youTube clips and read Historian's interesting comments.

According to these youTube clips, the Mayan's date in 2012 foretells a dark rift/black hole in the centre of the Milky Way - which concurs with modern astrology ... SO it's not just about the end of one calendar and the beginning of a new one!!

Rather worryingly, the "web.bot project" (on those clips) foretell of a nuclear war in 2008 - 2009 ... Russia/USA? Let's just hope they're wrong!

Cosmos and Psyche

Dr Richard Tarnass, the author of the "Passion of the Western Mind," which was a thorough tour of western western philosophy has also been looking at planetary alignments and historical events. His recent book "Cosmos and Psyche" is all about this. There is quite a bit on what the astrological patters and how they coincide with historical periods of change. There are some pretty convincing correlations particularly with outer planets that have only recently become know to modern science; Pluto and Uranus [if I remember correctly].

This book then looks at the planetary coincidences of the times we are now going through with some interesting, if not striking patterns of what we can expect in the coming years up to 2012 particularly.

This is a link to a long radio interview with him on Youtube
