I don't usually worry about women's lot, but one thing recently made me really cross.

I got a new yoga teacher. She told me to stand up straight in the first, starting posture. "Do I have to keep my feet together? I always hate that." I said.

"No - women don't. That's only for men. They say that, because in the old days only men used to practise yoga. For women it's better to put them a bit apart."

Apparently, the reason that women are still told to have their feet together when standing upright in yoga, is BECAUSE IT WAS ALWAYS MEN.

Did you know this? Did your yoga teacher mention this? I thought not.
I've done yoga for decades, had several teachers, and they always made me put my feet together. With the result that I was always more worried about not falling over, than about doing the exercise right.

I love my new teacher. Thank you Liz!!!

Yeah, you're right! I completed my yoga teacher training at Chandra Yoga International last year in Rishikesh, India and they taught us the same thing! That for women it is actually more anatomically correct to stand with the feet a bit apart (closer to under the hips), because our hips are wider so its actually better for us. I always felt the same way, feet together is so uncomfortable!

I prefer to have my feet apart, too. Otherwise, I feel like I'm crushing "myself". 😀

Not bragging really, just that the muscles on my inner thighs are quite large from doing weighted lunges and other leg work.

. I can't see why ANYONE should need to stand with their feet together. Its easier to balance with the feet apart anyway.

I think it's best to stand whichever way is comfy to the individual. Yoga is about doing it at your pace and in whichever way feels best for you. When it comes to right or wrong, i think it's right if it feels good and 'wrong',( or rather bad, wrong is such a harsh word, ) but bad when it feels bad. Everyone is different. 😀
