.. and wondered if any of you live/know that area what places you can recommend to eat? I have the guides but a personal recommendation would be great!

RE: Visiting Devon and Cornwall in May

Devon and Cornwall are probably not the best places for veggies to visit, being right in the heart of both hunting and farming country, but despair not, as all it not lost. Accoridng to my copy of Vegetarian Britian, most of the good veggie restaurants seem to be clustered around south Devon rather than north, with several listed in Exeter and Plymouth, and also a rather nice sounding Takeaway in Totnes. There is also a health food store called Reapers in Tiverton, and several branches of Holland and Barrett. As a regular vistor to Ilfracombe in North Devon, I have to say that there is really not much there at all for vegetarians, although most B&B's will cater for you. The one I am booked into this year, the Laston House Hotel has a very good menu, with at least 4 different dishes to choose from, not that I am planning to eat there anyway though, as it is quite expensive. Still, it iis nice to know that I can if I want to. There is also a health food store in Ilfracombe High Street, that from what I remember has a little counter where you can buy home made goodies, such as pies, pastries, wheat free bread. If you are in the area, it would definately be worth checking out.

As far as supermarkets go, there are both Tesco and Sainsburys in Barnstaple, and no doubt they have other branches too around both Devon and Cornwall. There is also a large Safeway not far form Bideford if you are planning to go anywhere near there.

As far as Cornwall is concerned, can't reaklly comment other than what is found again in Vegetarian Britain. Most of the restaurants listed though seem to be around the St Ives area. Perhaps the best thing to do is get yourself a copy of this book.

One further word of warning, if you are going via the A303/M5, don't bother to stop at Taunton Deane Services unless you are desperate for the loo. The only veggie food they seem to do is horriblem, greasy breakfasts, last time I passed through they had even run out of jacket spuds, and tried to get me to have tuna instead! If I were you I would stiop at one of the numerous Little Chefs instead, or if ytou have the time, take a detour through Glastonbury, where you will be spoilt for choice!

Hi. If you get to Totnes (which you must!) check out the Willow which is a wonderful veggie place. I think the address is Fore Street but ask anyone and they're bound to be able to direct you to it. They have a weekly curry night :)which is wonderful and probably the most authentic I've eaten outside India.

Hope you enjoy your hols.
