Help!
It's my friend's b'day tomorrow and she's a real girly-girl and would love a pink cake. Except I'm vegan and, if possible, I'd love to make one that we could all enjoy (one of the other girls is allergic to dairy anyway). Any ideas what I could use as a dye? Or can you buy a natural, vegan alternative to cochineal?
The other thing I should mention is she is allergic to strawberries so that rules that out!
I'd be grateful for any suggestions
You can still buy "artificial" red food colouring. It's generally Allura Red or Ponceau 4R. That may be your only option. Can't think of a natural alternative that is readily available I'm afraid. There is a company supposedly launching a new range of natural food colours this year some time. No use for you this year (or me for that matter - lo's b'day in 8 days) but worth bearing in mind. Try googling Innocent Food Colours.
This one looks very compact and over whelming but might help, it seems to have a few cakes on there.

A little beetroot or red grape juice should give you pink when mixed with icing sugar
