Until very recently one would be able to buy 250g of ORGANIC tofu, made in the UK (so it said on the package) from Cauldron Foods in the bigger supermarkets. Not any more. Very pompously, one must say, they have launched a new range of products, replacing the old version for a new 396g, NON ORGANIC, cheaper in comparison to the previous (but not that cheap!), and packet in the US (!!). Very symptomatic. It says it all: mass production at the very low cost possible to reach the higher profit, hence, more pesticides and other chemicals in our Tofu.

I have emailed them. This was the answer:

"Cauldron products have never been an exclusively organic brand and has never
made organic a central part of its brand promise. In research we found that
very few said they go out of their way to buy organic products only. When we
probed deeper it became clear that organic was not significant motivator for
many of our consumers. They were far more interested in the use of natural
ingredients, health and, of course, taste. By moving away from Organic we
have been able to invest more in recipe development, quality and provide
better value for money.
The previous recipe tofu is not being manufactured anymore and will be
replaced by the larger pack original tofu."

I am the only one related Vegan diet to healthy hence organic food whenever possible?

Actually, this disappointment had a bright side. It made me look it up for alternatives, and I have found a cheaper option, still organic, that looks very reliable, but not available at the closest supermarket.

Any thoughts on this?

Bruno

Thanks for posting this Bruno...I usually read labels and I missed this change from Cauldron completely! You're absolutely right. A question...if it's from the US is GM soya being used?

I also have in my fridge tofu from Clearspot which, I'm glad to say is, organic and from the UK.

We've got the Organic 250g Couldron Tofu in the fridge, so the change you talk about must be a very recent one. It's very disappointing if they've gone non-organic, especially if it is GM soya from the US. Looks like we may have to source our Tofu from elsewhere.

Hi,
I work at for a wholefoods supplier and we specialise in selling vegetarian and vegan products. We used to stock a large range of Cauldron products, but recently they were taken over by Premier Foods, (a uk food giant owning lots of supermarket brands) and a lot of their recipes were reformulated. We now supply a lot less cauldron products because the ethical credentials have dropped, and a lot of them just don't taste as good. It was sad to see this take over as we had worked with Cauldron for years.

I'm a vegan and I always eat Clear Spot Tofu, which is a great organic product and made in the UK.

Good luck,
Amy

I'm not that bothered that it's not organic any more, but I hate the texture of the new version. It's so soft and horrible, it doesn't press well and when I froze it, it was like a dried out old dish sponge. DISGUSTING!

I wish the supermarkets sold Taifun, it's SOOO much better.

Well, we had a pack of the couldron tofu just last week (the first one since they changed). The texture seems the same to us, and at least it's now shoing as "Non-GM" on the label which is better than nothing, though it's still produced in the US.
