Hi All,
I used to have a poor diet before I met my (now including raw food) vegetarian girlfriend. As you'd expect my vegetable intake soared and I've since lost weight, possibly more than I'd like to. I need to buy new suits is what I'm saying.
Anyway, I'm looking for any info on how to gain weight on a vegetarian diet but in a healthy way. She'd also like to as she believes she's below her BMI.
My research so far from various websites say about eating more starchy foods like pasta and potatoes but these can leave us feeling uncomfortably bloated.
I was thinking for me some sort of protein supplement/powders/shakes etc in addition to my gym routine but "these are bad for you" apparently.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated

Hi,
Here's my list of "fattening" veggie food:
Bread + Jam (best with homemade bread& Jam)
Honey
Pastry
Beans
Nuts
Olive oil
Roast root vegetables in olive oil
Dumplings made with vegetable suet
Jam rolly poly made with vegetable suet
Samosas
Homous
Paneer
Tofu
Sauces (i.e. white sauce)
Chutney
There are loads more, and please don't blame me if you put too much on 😉
Remember that most food suppliments are no better than eating processed food.

Hello LewisUK
Great to hear that you are now eating so much better and that your vegetable intake has soared! Brilliant.
The only trouble is you are not only what you eat but what you absorb. This means you enzymes need to be available and working and your gut bacteria need to be well balanced and functioning as they should. In this era of high stress and antibiotics this is unlikely to be the case.
For enzymes, I would look at raw fresh juices, smoothies and salads. You may need to supplement an enzyme to help you digest beans until your body has got used to them.
For gut bacteria rebalancing I would suggest non-sweetened bio-yoghurts and/or keffir daily.
As far as bloating after eating wheat products, give them a miss for now (avoid altogether - read labels) and look for alternatives such as oats, quinoa, brown rice, millet and amaranth. After 6 weeks do a wheat challenge as see if you react to it - if you do react again, go and see a qualified Nutritionist who will sort you out!
Snack on nuts and seeds. Finely grind 2 tablespoons mixed linseed, sunflower, sesame and pumpkin seeds and add them to your porridge, smoothies, soups daily - full of vitamins and minerals. Snack on sprouted seeds - either bought or done at home - highly available nutrition.
Avoid refined foods, sugar, hydrogenated fats - all of which cause added stress to the body!
Eat well!

If you're not vegan, milk is good.
It helped me immensely in gaining some of the weight I lost when severely depressed and on the wrong medication.
Wheat free stuff
😀 Hello & thanks for your replies.
In regards to avoiding wheat stuff what about these "free from" products I've seen in the stores, such as gluten & wheat free? Are they any good or will they still probably produce bloating side effects?
I'm basing this on a wheat intolerance theory, not that I have one but I heard somewhere that x% of humans have it and dont realise it
Maybe can you both try and enjoy Banana/Dattes/Honey milk shakes???? :p
Wait a minute, tofu makes you fat? omg I didnt know it!
Well if you are vegetarian, I recomend you milk and cheese! =)

Hi Lewis,
I would suggest seeing a Naturopath to make sure your nutrients are actually being assimilated (absorbed and utilized).
Also you can check out a site by the vegetarian society that lists some good food sources for protein:
I hope that helps 🙂

Easy way to gain wieght for veggies
Lewis
I had the same issue when I turned veggie then again when I turned Vegan
Now I take Moringa Leaf powder which has been used medicinally in India for centuries, it is now used to help people recover from malnutrition
You can add it to hot whater to make a tea or add it to soups and smoothies
I get mine at where its inexpensive and all proceeds go towards helping subsistance farmers
win win
I've been interested in this also, as I've recently been reading about the benefits of a plant based diet. I want to go vegan, and have begun supplementing vegan foods for animal products, but I still have a long way to go.
I want to gain weight, as in build muscle, so I'm assuming fatty vegan foods are the wrong way to go.
Is there such a thing as vegan protein powder?
