I have recently started having 1-to-3 tuition in Pilates. I've had a couple matwork sessions and last week I got to have a go on the machines. I didn't even realise that machines were used in Pilates. I thought it was quite exciting. Anyone else used the machines? Which do you prefer - matwork or machine-work?

Hi,
I was told in Germany that the machines are only used to teach the student about the lines they should be following when doing the pilates exercises.

Once the student knows how and where to place the limbs then the machine is no longer used, but I guess everyone teaches differently.

Kind regards,
Christina

Hi,

The whole range of pilates equipment was originally designed for the student who wasn't quite strong enough for the Matwork. As the systems evolved the work on the reformers etc developed and each exercise is used to develop strength and control for different body movements/movement patterns.

Exercises on the reformers will make you stronger in similar exercises/shapes on the mat and vice versa. The equipment provides you with a little more support but can be equally challenging to the more advanced and super advanced students. I love doing the advanced workouts on the reformers and matwork.

I'm still new so i use the machines. I think matwork is for more advanced people.
