I use some meditation breathing strategies in my therapies in order to calm clients and help them to relax completely. I also do Buddhist meditation myself. I will put a Buddhist meditation video series in the Buddhism forum here for anyone who might find it helpful.
Generally, to calm one's mind, its best to sit in a comfortable position with one's spine straight, and gently place one's attention on the breath. If one notices that one's mind has wandered, just bring the attention back to the breathing again. If the mind is very agitated and full of thoughts, one can say mentally "letting go" with the outbreath to begin with.
Do this for 10 mins to start with and then the time can be increased gradually for up to an hour.
With kind wishes,
Elen
