Hi All,

I'm sure we all do this sometimes. You sit quietly wanting a few moments to yourself and you nod off. Or do you? When you come round you think you have been asleep but you have been aware of everything going on around you, people talking, noise from the tv, cat scratching at the door etc.
So, have we been asleep or have we managed some deep meditation?

Sounds like light sleep to me. Meditation means to go within, so if you were in deep meditation chances are you would not have noticed the things you did.

It is a very difficuly thing to split
Are you in a deep meditation?
Are you sleeping?
It would be difficult for someone else to work out
Even if someone else is there, even they could not work it out

I wish you luck in working it all out
I have run a meditation group for many years
And I cannot tell who has been where

However, I was always told that you need to follow instrictions
No going off on your own and doing your own thing
However, some of my best meditations have been done on my own

The main qualities of a meditation state are awakeness and relaxation. In a sitting posture with a straight spine it is easier to maintain alertness. Lying on your back there is more relaxation and it is more easy to fall asleep.

There are a number of different methods of meditation. Meditation states are not defined by loss of awareness of sense stimulae like sound. Meditation states use an object upon which to rest the attention but when the mind becomes stable they may just rest in a stable state of attention. They train the mind to focus attention and then relax the attention. This is only possible when the mind becomes pliant and peaceful. It requires gentleness and curiosity to develop these qualities of mind if stabilisation is not going to be willful or harsh. Controlling the mind just creates more problems. Some meditation practices use sense stimulae as the object upon which the attention rests. Once good states of stabilisation become established in meditation meditation practices may use strong emotions as objects. Staying with strong emotions enables transformation of the energy of that emotion.

when you say you have been told that you need to follow instruction. I feel what is talked about here is guided meditation which can include visualisation or awareness instructions I can understand if you were in a class room situation the tutor would want the class to stay with the guidance.
when you do your own meditation the idea is to do your own thing how else would you be able to discover ' the self'
technically guided visualisation is not meditation.
Have fun finding yourself doing your own thing.

That is deep meditation. Keep napping! Meditation is not about willful effort. Being in a state where a quiet awareness takes over is meditation. What else? It is not about looking within etc etc because what is within is without. Infact they are not two.

I wouldn't know what to call it, light sleep or deep meditation - but I do know that it's a state I love to be in: a source of profound contentment that I rarely achieve.

The difference between deep sleep and meditation is this: in deep sleep you are unconscious, in meditation you are conscious. Your mind sleeps, not the deepest consciousness, which is real you. The goal is to become conscious while you are passing through dream and deep sleep states of your mind.

In doing meditation, you get into a certain state of stability in which you are able to improve on your concentration skills. This gives you an advantage at work, at home or even when in stressful situations. When you learn how to meditate properly, you’ll learn how to place your thoughts on silence.

Being enlightened is perhaps the main objective meditation. It lets us unravel things spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. It lets you achieve the inner peace you needed especially in today’s hectic, fast paced lifestyle.
