Hi im doing a course in holistic massage and one of the pieces of coursework i am doing at the moment is on 4 different complementary therapies. For one of them i have picked meditation and i need to find out when becoming a practitioner what are the regulations and legal obligations they have to have and also what training do they require?

Hi Lisa,

You don't need any qualifications to be a meditation practitioner, but perhaps you are referring to a meditation teacher?

Even so, there are many meditation techniques out there and there's no regulatory body that I know of for teachers, except self regulated organisations such as Transcendental Meditation and some others.

The training required would depend if someone is sticking to a particular technique of a particular organisation, such as TM teachers who have to have been meditating for a certain amount of time, and have to learn verbatim all the teachings and sign up to agree not to disclose certain things, such as how the mantra's are chosen etc. (though it's not really secret any more). In principle, anyone could become a meditation teacher or lead a group meditation session, you'd just have to know how to meditate and provide a good course/teaching.

As for legal requirements, there would only be the standard legal requirements of public liability insurance for running a course, data protection for any student/client details etc. and it would be sensible (though no legal requirement) to check medical history with a view to understanding how meditation could effect the person and what after support is required.

Energylz's reply seems excellent to me.

I wonder if you are thinking of "mindfulness meditation", which is being taught by some counsellors and psychotherapists to their clients to help the client cope with such diverse conditions as OCD and depression.

I am of the opinion that meditation is very easy to learn, and very hard to practise. However if the client is ready and willing to put in the effort, then it is a priceless free technology that the client (and therapist!) can use to change their lives completely, no doubt about that.
