Hello,
I've been doing meditation for about two years, almost every day. When doing mindfulness of breathing and counting from one to ten for ten breaths I realised yesterday that I always imagine the number from one to ten at the left side of my head. So yesterday I changed it and imagined it at the front. Does this have a connection with the third eye and focussing or does it not mean anything at all? Thanks for any insights 🙂
Hi hejog
You might get more replies if this thread was moved to the Meditation forum. The General Discussions forum is pretty high traffic and threads here sink quite quickly.

Anapanasati - minfulness of breathing
hi Hejog39
I can't really answer your question about using counting or third eyes!
we are taught not to use counting, mantra, visualization, imagination during Anapanasati meditation in the tradition that I follow...
we just focus on the breath or the touch of the breath at the entrance of the nostrils and just observe everything else that arises in the mind and body with the understanding of impermenence...
we just sit and try to keep our minds in the present moment...!

Hello,

Hi Hejog,
It may relate to the way the brain typically is split into different areas for different tasks such as Left for Logic and Right for Creativity etc. So the counting of numbers was probably more of a Logical thing in your mind and thus you seemed to visualise it on that side. Of course, with concentration you can change that to appear where you like, because you were able to impart some creativity on it, thus centering it. Not sure it's anything really to do with the 3rd eye (apart from you visualising it in that locale), unless you've been doing something 'spiritual' to assist in the visualisation.
As already mentioned, there are different types of meditation, most of which involve some sort of focus, though mantra based meditation is considered non-focused as you don't place your focus on it, but let it just be, repeating over and over as it chooses to be, and you let yourself be aware of it. If you focus on something, you tend to keep youself in the mind, so though you may experience great relaxation and a certain level of meditation, the belief is that the deepest meditation comes when you let go of anything you focus on.
Also, another common consideration is to not get too hung up on what happens or is experienced during a meditation session. It's how the meditation helps you to live your daily life outside of meditation that matters. i.e. living in the present moment more, feeling more healthy etc.

Thanks Energylz and Bodyworker for your replies, think I will try some other ways of meditating 🙂
The only purpose of meditation is to empty the mind.
The easiest way I found to do so is to balance the breath so that it flows equally freely from both nostrils and bring your attention from head to heart area and reside in it. When your attention is in heart the mind begins to slow down. and the identification with your thoughts begins to be severed. If thoughts happen, gently keep coming back to the heart. Over time it becomes easy to stay in heart out of meditation hours
