If someone goes into a very deep meditation and I mean deep one where you start from the bottom and work up, not a visual one i.e. where u think you are in a field etc.. and someone disturbs you maybe by putting their face near yours or a tap on the shoulder to talk to you and you kind of get jolted, how serious is this what could happen other than very fast heart beat that takes 10 mins to slow down..

I'm not sure but it can be quite a shock to the system as you've gone quite deep within. I suppose a bit like someone in deep sleep all of a sudden getting a slap, so not good.

My meditation master is coming in about 2 weeks time from Mauritius to give discourse. If you want pm me and I will give you details as to where as he will be able to answer your query much better than me, being an enlightened person :o)

Dhiren, I'd be grateful if you'd pm me too. I'm always happy to be in the company of enlightened beings.

Good question Flower - have thought that myself. I'd be rather interested to know too.

My meditation more often than not gets interrupted by a cat flying on to the bed for a cuddle! x

Hi Flower,
I guess it depends upon what you mean by 'deep meditation'. If, for instance, you were practicing pratyahara, and or samatha type meditation, and were in a state of deep sense withdrawal, then really, you wouldn't have any awareness of somebody tapping you on the shoulder or coming close to you. So no problems.
If you were really engrossed in vipassana type meditation, and had a good degree of equanimity, then a tap or voice or whatever would just register as a sense-object, which you would see arise and fall, and you are immediately on to noting the next mind object. Again, no problem.
I suppose the point is that, if you register the event, then at worst, you get a fright. If you are really deeply withdrawn, then you wont notice anything, so there's nothing to worry about.
Warm regards,
Shankar.

Hi Shankar

Just to say thank you for replying. I have no idea what kind of mediation my son is doing just knew he was deep, he seems okay at the moment other than in hospital with appendix removal yesterday, he is new to meditation hence my concern as although I have been into spiritual things for 29 years, I just cannot meditate so no idea really.
