RE: Need....Want...

Hi Flower [sm=wave.gif]

Yikes, we have the same signature - great minds think alike 😀

The way I understand it is -

I need to breath, eat healthy food, hydrate myself, protect myself (a roof over my head, clothes to keep warm & protectedetc.) and a certain degree of love / affection - maybe needs are essential in keeping the higher self happy and functional.

I want a big house, a sports car, to win the lottery, to be accepted by others, to be famous etc - maybe wants are ego drivenand create attachment.

Thank you for making me think about this - I am really looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say.

Love and angel kisses

RE: Need....Want...

Hi

great signiture tho!!!

anyway my thinking at the moment, and not sure how to word this bit.. so will try

If we want something say love, physical relationship, we want a drink etc its a want because we want it..

But if its a need for love, a need for a physical relationship, a need for drink, its a need and a need can become addictive and would be wrong maybe, so what I am thinking.... what is right if there is a right.. or what is more normal..

Is it a want or a need... again for example if we need a drink its on the verge or becoming alcoholic, if we need a physical relationship would that make it more based on lust rather than a want because of feelings... if we need love are we lacking because we need rather than wanting love.. if that makese sense..

Hi Flower

Nice to see you back here! 🙂 Without wishing to appear too nosey, I wonder if you have a particular reason for asking? As your question stands, it seems rather hypothetical ... perhaps that's your intention. 😉

Are you familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? Here's the Wikipedia version:

[link= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslo w's_hierarchy_of_needs= http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslo w's_hierarchy_of_needs[/link]

which givesthis triangular diagram for ease of explanation.

[link= ][/link]

Ooh, it seems to have copied over, I hope that's OK.

Small quote from the text on that page:

The basic concept is that the higher needs in this hierarchy only come into focus once all the needs that are lower down in the pyramid are mainly or entirely satisfied. Growth forces create upward movement in the hierarchy, whereas regressive forces push prepotent needs further down the hierarchy.

How does allthis fit with your question, if at all?

RE: Need....Want...

Hi Holistic

The reason why I asked was a friend was talking about wants and needs and I have to be honest I was not sure what was the difference, until I ask my hubby what the difference was after I put up the thread..

So is the chart based on need or wants?

i know we need to breath, eat to survive, its not a want.. but I may want certain food but that is not a need..

I suppose we need and want security not too sure on that one.. esp with family and jobs so that to me would be a want and a need, a want to be satisfied in a job and the need to earn enough to support our family was going to say our needs lol..

We want friends, but do we need friends, is it better to want than need? if we need does that mean we are lacking something in our lives because it is a need?

We would like self esteem rather than need it? or do we need self esteem to make ourselves feel good?

So, I dont know if I am reading the chart right.. but its got me thinking.. strange when people bring things up and it gets u thinking coz u r not sure of the words.. at times I am a little nieve.. lol..

Hi Flower

It's famously known as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, so yes, it's about needs ;)and should be read from the bottom upwards, as the small block of quoted text suggests.

Did you click on the weblink above for the rest of it, from which I took this? If you scroll down a bit you'll find much more, hopefully of interest.

Right now though, my main need is of the most basic, physiological type ... food!!! ... so I will return to your specific further questions later, if I may. Enjoyable reading in the meantime, if the concept appeals 🙂

RE: Need....Want...

How odd to read this post today... I've been writing an essay based around Maslowz model..
I was quite simply intending to write what Giles wrote..

Things you need are things you require to fulfill basic human living..
Things you desire are things above and beyong these basic needs, which, if taken to an extreme can become undesirably powerful cravings.

It's odd how much our basic needs in Western society are so far divorced from those in other less wealthy countries. You can survive with practically nothing, however, I do wonder.. basic needs in this country, if we were put into extreme circumstances.. that we would not survive with just the basics cuase our cognitive understanding of needs is so different from those others..

What makes it a hard to tell the difference is that sometimes a want becomes a need because sometimes something you desire can become something you require.

I would actually rephrase that as:

"sometimes a want becomes a need because sometimes something you desire can become something you honestly believe you require."

All I require is drinkable water, suitable nourishment and something to keep the elements of the weather from killing me. Can't really think of anything else.... oh yeah... a computer so I can talk on HP a lot. 😀

RE: Need....Want...

:(:(:(I need something:(:(:(and I think i just realized of this!!!!
just thinking about it last nite and today I read this thread, just like "there you go!"
but sometimes it doesnt depend just on you to get what you need I guess, although i am a great believer that when you want or need something enough you will get it definetely.
oh dear dear... would it be good to realize of a need that was already inside of you if you cant really decide as much what to do?! i think i feel worse to know it!
