Hi to all,
I have been reading some life coaching books and they refer to STEPPA. I know it is a framework that people work to but I can't seem to find anything on the net explaining a bit more in depth about it, or even get a copy of it. Can anyone help.
thanks [sm=jump1.gif]

RE: life coaching with STEPPA
Hi Alex
Areas of current study are as follows :-
Relevance of choice, ability to analyse thoughts and willingness to grow and learn, beliefs and values, imagination and insight.
I am able to get the facts across however my tutor wants me to develop my thinking - perhaps I need to develop my study further in order to be more expansive in my responses. The problems with home study is that you miss the dialogue - so thanks for offering your advice.

yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. So.... what are you doing about it? What are you finding most challenging?
On a more practical level, true, you would need to develop your thinking process and expand your thinking laterally and in depth. Try to focus on an issue and see how far and how deep you can go in thinking about it. One important tip is obviously to practise coaching as mich as you possibly can.
There are also a number of books which you can look at to help you and support you in this. And particularly helpful is to try and use some NLP techniques which are very powerful in the thinking and communication process.
Relevance of choice
How can you support people in making the right choices for them? Are you clear what "choice" actually means? Are you aware of the power games that surround choices? Are you aware of the emotional conditioning, of the self limiting beliefs that interact here?
ability to analyse thoughts
See my comment at the beginning of this posting
willingness to grow and learn
This is a key issue for our clients. Unless they are willing to do so then .... there is little scope let alone purpose for coaching. That has to start with you and then you need to make sure that your clients are ready to adapt, change, move on. This is certainly not done by giving them a series of positive affirmations, which might help, but rather in developing a rapport with the client so that he/she can trust you and take the step forwatd that he/she needs to take. It is in supporting your clients to learn to trust themselves more and more and above believing in themselves that people will change.
beliefs and values
This is CRUCIAL area. The important point first of all is that you clearly understand the difference between values and beliefs. Think of how your values and beliefs affect your life. The same applies to our clients. And because of this, how can we make sure that our clients set goals that are on line with their values and beliefs? How can we make sure that those values and beliefs do not hold them back?
imagination and insight
This is something that you will develop more and more as you learn to and grow as a coach. It is really allowing mind and heart to flow together in a logical pattern that brings clarity and support to our clients.
Well I hope this helps a bit but feel free to come back and ask more if you need/wish to. Take care.
RE: life coaching with STEPPA
There is a good article on STEPPPA (it has three "Ps", not two) available by a link through Angus McLeod's website - a Google search on STEPPPA should throw it up. Glad to have found the forum - like Miranda I too am studying coaching, aiming to consolidate my coaching experience into something more formal and qualified.
