My life has been posted all over these boards on the "mental and emotional" forum this last year or so.

I am working through things and have had a lot to deal with in the past year or so, I have made a slip up recently, but am trying to see it as a blip and not give up and believe I am at square one because I know I am not. However, I do have this sense that I am "stuck" and can't seem to find the answers to move forward.

I know things need to change in my life, but I'm not sure what things or how.

I really don't think I would benefit from counselling as I know my weaknesses and strengths and am very aware of my feelings and behaviour.

However, I am now thinking about life coaching, but don't really know a lot about it. From what I have seen it is very expensive and I am not sure if it is for me. I think I need someone to look at the whole picture for me.

Jade, have a read through the "sticky" threads pinned to the top of this forum ... there are two older ones by a former moderator, which are descriptive of coaching.

Within the training resourcesthread you'll find this one, which is also descriptive, and is both concise and comprehensive:

[DLMURL="http://www.coachfederation.org/ICF/For+Current+Members/Regulatory/Coaching+Professionalism/Professional+Coaching+Language/"] http://www.coachfederation.org/ICF/F...hing+Language/ [/DLMURL]
Page which links to pdf article by David Matthew Prior, MCC, MBA**, Co-Chair, ICF Ethics & Standards Committee, 'Professional Coaching Language for Greater Public Understanding©'. The link for the pdf is on the right of the page.

Basically, it's an article about communicating with clients, the general public and the media in language that does not confuse coaching with other professions which may appear similar. Includes very clear distinction, in simple table form, of the differences in terminology between Psychotherapy and Coaching. Recommended reading.

The one headed 'Notice - Please Read' concerns therequests by trainee coaches for volunteers to assist the coaches in attaining qualifications at varying levels, and there's a link to the Student/Training forum, where you'll find various such threads, one quite recent. 'Free coaching' in exchange for feedback to help with case studies.

I hope all of these leads for you to discover more about coaching are helpful. Bottom line is that coaching is about where you are now, establishing your values and goals, and moving forward in your life. It may take the past into account, but that is not the focus of coaching.

If you want to get yourself out of a rut or really get on and achieve your goals, then you could do worse than speak to a life coach. Personally, having to be responsible to someone made me do stuff that'd otherwise have taken a lot longer to do.

After doing a bit of investigating - life coaching sounds great on specific issues, but I want someone to look at the whole picture, not just career or family etc. Although maybe if I just focus on one issue, the rest will fall into place?

Jade,

It's a tall order for you to be Life Coached for everything in one go. Life coaching generally goes along the lines of focussing on one specific area at a time. Of course it's totally up to you what you want to look at and most likely you would choose the thing that you feel is most important for that session. Then in subsequent sessions you can look at other areas to work on and see how to fit it in with your goals from the first session etc.

It seems to me, Giles, that what Jade has posted about seeing the whole picture and your replymight be slightly at variance.

This is the purpose of, for example, the Wheel of Life, which does very much initially look at all aspects of a client's life, and then areas of priority are worked out between the coach and the client. It's not quite the same as coaching for "everything in one go", which I don't think Jade is seeking, though broadly I'd agree with the rest of your post.

terminology, schmirminology, that's what I meant. Of course the wheel of life helps to identify what is a priority and also the wheel of life can be completely blank and the client put in their own categories if they wish.
