I'm coming out of a very emotionally rough Winter. I was suffering moderate depression, and still have episodes or "mood swings".

As a result of the depression, I took on many tasks that now seem daunting. I don't want to give them up, but I am starting to fear these changes I've made to my life, and I'm not even done. There are other things coming that I want to embrace.

I came across this life coaching concept (new to me), so I thought maybe I could use some help sorting out my life. I live in Harrogate in North Yorkshire. Any suggestions on a life coach or other pointers would be appreciated. Thank you for reading and take care.

Hey Scott, I'm not in UK so can't recommend someone but will say that unfortunately its not as simple as the life coach sorting out your life for you. They give you techniques to do the work yourself!

Hello scott,

I'm sorry I missed your post when you first made it, and you haven't had replies any sooner.

I would say that the great thing about coaching is that, as it is very much focussed on action taken by the client, it can be very effective to have the support of a coach ... as you suggest ... to help sort out your life, and can also be effective in helping with feelings of depression or 'mood swings'.

I must emphasise though that coaching is not therapy, what I'm saying is that coaching to help you make positive changes to which you're committed can ... almost as a bonus, if you like ... be instrumental in making you feel better. A kind of 'too busy to feel miserable' 😉 Does that make sense?

Although I know Harrogate well, having lived there for many years, it's been a good few since I was last there, and I don't know any life coaches in that area.

However, you could look in the HP Directory [link at the top of every page] and the other thing to mention is that much life coaching is done by telephone, even if ... IMO anyway ... an initial face-to-face meeting is desirable.

In the meantime, if feeling daunted by it all, you could start by making some lists. These four categories can be useful for sorting out priorities. List what is:

- Urgent
- Important
- Neither urgent nor important, but to be done sometime
- Bin it/don't bother with it!

It can also help to pinpoint the fears of changes, and see what they relate to. By this I mean:

- Fear of doing something
- Fear of being something
- Fear centred round other people's opinions and how much they matter to you.

[By all means add others that are relevant just to you ... those were just a few I worked with at one time]

If they come down more weighted in one particular area, this can be very useful in overcoming those fears.

Good luck, and I hope this has been helpful. 🙂

Hi Scott

Great tips Holistic!

It sounds like you are on the right track by recognising that you want to take action - thats often the most difficult step!

I don't know of anyone based in your local area, but the Association of Coaching have a directory that you can search.

Kind regards

Amie

Like Scott, life coaching is also a new concept to me. Is it like a personal trainer but for... let's say... working? I would like to be more confident and motivated. I seem to go from one way of thinking to another.

Is there such a thing as life coaching 'online'?

Thanks, I'm new to a lot of this way of thinking. Came from a very controlling background.

Yes, daisy123, coaching can be done in many ways, in person, by phone, by e-mail.
Talking is best because it is important for a coach to hear what one says and how, and also what one does not say...

Hi Daisy123

Life coaches work on many areas including gaining confidence and increasing motivation. Sessions usually happen either face to face or via telephone coaching.

If you are interested in life coaching and want to find a good coach, have a look on the internet and coaching directory for coaches in your area. Most coaches offer a free 'taster' session which will give you the chance to get to know him/her better. Coaching is a gentle, yet powerful journey and you would want to have a life coach you feel comfortable talking to, somone who understands you and encourages you to be the person you are meant to be.

Please get in touch and we can chat more about coaching, I'm always happy to help in any way I can.

Hi

I'm a Master Practitioner of NLP, Time Line Therapy and Hypnotherapy and also a Certified NLP Coach.

One thing that is important to note, is the difference between Coaching and Therapy - as already mentioned.

Coaching comes from the perspective of "I'm OK ... and I want to be even better"

Therapy - would be "I'm aware something is wrong ... and I want to resolve that..."

Coaching will work with your existing skills, abilities and values and allow you to make key distinctions in when you got results and what worked for you .... plus what can work for you in the future.

How to set goals - so that they are actually achievable!

Have you ever set a goal and achieved it ??

Have you ever set a goal and NOT achieved it !??!

We all have ... so, coaching is really about how to CONSISTENTLY achieve your desired outcomes in whatever area of life.

Sometimes, when coaching a client .... we hit a hurdle that they need to overcome, so in those circumstances you would step outside the coaching realm - undertake the relevant therapy/intervention before continuing the coaching. It all depends on the individual.

Coaching is generative & OUTCOME focussed...... i.e what do you want !?
