Hi

For some reason I am unable to loose my pear shaped figure: Below is my eating and exercise weekly plan:

meals

breakfast (7am)
beans on 1 slice of bread
sugerless tea with skimmed milk

lunch (1:30pm)
wholeweat pasta /tuna salad

dinner (7pm)
steamed chicken with steamed veggies

exercise weekly

3 alternating days of cardio between 25 to 45 minuts
3 alternating days of weight training 2 major muscle groups each day

Am I doing something wrong?

I am male 29, 5f 10" tall and weigh 189lb, (13.5 stones or 85.72kg)

I don't really care about loosing weight as it's expected to put muscle weight on if you weight train, i just can't seem to get rid of the pear shape... i.e. the excess fat on the chest and mid section areas.

HELP

Hi Narmi,

My first thought was about your diet. Are you actually eating enough? If your example is all you are eating then I would have thought for a man it's maybe not quite enough. If you don't eat enough then your body may be hanging on to its fat because it thinks it won't get enough from your diet.

Also, and I'm no expert here, but are you doing the right exercises? For example, weight training didn't do a great deal for me but when I start running then I started to loose weight. However, I didn't change shape, I'm still pear shaped, just a better pear shaped!

🙂

RE: Unable to loose the pear shape

Hi Sarah7,

About 1 month ago when i was on holiday (warm country), i ate different (more fatty) food but which was about the same quantity as what I eat here. I lost 1 stone, around 4 inches3"from the mid sectionin 3 weeks without exercise only pushups and situps in the mornings.

What's going on?

Now I'm back in the uk and 1 month later, I'm back to my original weight again..., eating less fat and exercising more. It's almost like "they" are putting something in uk food to prevent you from loosing weight..........

p.s. unfortunately i can't do running, i find it too boring. i feel happy for you that you have managed to change your shape! 🙂

Narmi,

I have just taken the diet that you posted on here and put it through a calorie counter and basically I don't think your eating enough. It isa well recognised fact that men need on average 2500 calories per day ~ it also wideley recognised that if we eat under 1000 calories per day are bodies go into starvation mode and hold on to all the fat within the food in order to protect us from starving.

You are averaging approximateley 853 calories per day ~ the reason you lost weight on holiday is that you ate more calories and so your body was not in starvation mode and therefore not holding on to the fat.

I am no expert but this is based on years of dieting and trying to find the best way to look after my body. I honestly believe that if you up your calorie intake that you will lose weight.

RE: Unable to loose the pear shape

Narmi2 - Very nutshell: If you overexercise, or don't eat enough to fuel your metabolism, or if you go too low fat,the body mobilises the stress hormones. Dieting and exercising together is a major metabolic alert - it is considered by some to be the metabolic equivalent of a famine and long trek to find food for our ancestors. It triggers lower metabolism, the burning of muscle tissue as well as a bit of fat, and when you do eat, it promotes fat storage rather than muscle rebuilding.

Ahigh carb, (usuallylow fat/low protein) diet causes insulin to be produced, the stress hormones rise in response to the high insulin, and directs storage in the form of fat, particularly around the midsection - its where the body wants the reserves to be in times of alert. So excess stress - whether its from dieting, over-exercising in relation to nutritional intake, whatever other reason, can cause a bigger tum, and its why stress reduction alone can sometimes be enough to reducea "stress band" round the middle.

So there is a metabolic reason why three weeks hols, some more fat in the diet and not so much exercisecould havehelped you lose the weight and the inches......:)

Adding back moderate healthy fats can be a big difference, it signals thatany fat famine is over, and can help stop the body's storage round the tum. It also allows absorption of fat soluble vitamins, and is better for bone health, because some minerals require vits for absorption, and if the vits are fat soluble............

(For women its even worse - Women tend to find it much more difficult to shift weight from their midsections, but female fat storage enzymes are much more dominant than in men, because of fertility, pregnancy, childbearing, breastfeeding and menopause. If a woman's diet is too low fat, it wakes up the fat storage enzymes and gets them busy....... )

But a "tweak" of your diet might make a big difference.

Thanks for the replies, they make a lot of sense.

Now the big question, what do I add and/or change from my diet?

Hi Narmi,

I would consult a nutrionist or dietician for advice on that.

I would look at the exercise regime, too. A gentle stroll for 30 minutes every other day won't do much. You need to get the heart racing (up to 150bpm for your age) and get a nice sweat going, I understand. Consult a personal trainer.

How intense is your cardio routine?
Can you post exactly what exercises you do? I'll do my best to help if I see what exactly you do.

Your calorie intake, going on your BMR is spot on for weight loss.
Have you changed your diet much from what you initally posted?

RE: Unable to loose the pear shape

You only intake 1383 Calories a day? Doesn't an adult male need about 2500 Calories? I would try eating more and see what happens to your weight in a month.

The reason I suggested a personal trainer was because you are best off getting advice from professionals you can speak to rather than strangers on the net.
