hi terri,
My advice would be to start slowly if you want to use running to lose weight.
Do not do more than once ever other day for the first 4 weeks, that way you will not burn up your enthusiasm in the first few weeks, which is just when you will be starting to notice that your body is changing and you are both getting more tired and more fit!
Once you have got past the first stage you can then take the frequency up to daily, if you want to. But you should still alternate your intensity and time. for example, doing a longer slower run one day and a shorter and harder run the next (times will be relative to your fitness level).
To ensure your weight loss continues over time you will need to do some exercise that builds muscle strength; weights, yoga, taichi or circuit training will fit the bill.
hope this helps.

Running in the morning is a part of my daily routine, I used to run around our area and I love how it works on my health. It improves my breathing and improves my immune system. I started my daily routine with walking and running. It also helps me to stay fit and healthy.
You won't lose weight unless you exercise AND eat right. In fact, it's more important to get your diet down. Stop eating fatty foods you know you shouldn't eat. Cut down on carbs, soda, all that stuff. I didn't lose my stomach until I stuck to a diet that I like and I'm consistent with.

This thread is very old....so I doubt if the original poster will respond....but may I gently point out you have no idea what their diet is like. I eat healthily , I don;t have a large intake of saturated fats, I don't drink soda, and I still have a major struggle with my weight. And cutting out carbs - which are a good source of slow release energy may not be a good idea for everyone
He's right to an extent - you need to look at the diet as well. The problem with the eat healthy mantra is that as you've figured out, you can eat as healthy as you like and still not get the weight/physique you want. It can help, of course. At some point, however, you will have to examine the quantity of food you're eating. To counter that, there is an "intuitive eating" notion but I intuitively want to guzzle 100 packets of McCoy's. 😀
Well, the OP (or anyone else) isn't going to lose weight doing the opposite of what I said, which would make my advice pretty solid for anyone that didn't leave a whole bunch of information to begin with.

Granted but you seem to be assuming they are eating fatty food and drinking soda etc........
Sure. I'd assume most overweight people can lose weight by adopting better health habits.

That's quite an assumption.
I agree with Terri that you need to start slowly if you want to use running to lose weight. Also, keep in mind that healthy diet and good habit are also very essential if you want to lose weight and stay fit.
