Ageing, aching and exercising

I would like to be more active re. taking exercise but feel constantly jeopardised by aching, stiff muscles. I do try to do stretching exercises but the painful aching stops this. I am in my mid 60s.

I used to cycle regularly until an accident (involving a parked car, whose door suddenly swung open into me) left me too nervous to cycle i.e. past parked cars. I used to successfully incorporate a stretching exercise regime back then too. I then became a full time carer and, what with no longer cycling, became obese.

I would like to be able just to do the stretching exercise regime that I used to do (fairly extensive) but these aches and pains are preventing me establishing this routine. It's when I exert myself slightly, i.e. do more walking than usual that the pains/aches come on the next day. Suggestions?

Oh, that's easy - local to me! A couple of years ago there used to be class at the Merton Adult Education centre in Whatley Avenue run by a woman who has MS - so very aware of individual limits. Worth checking to see if it's still running.

As mentioned, the problem is financial. The classes are expensive and are not concessionary for those on low incomes, i.e. pensioners.

One of my classes is £4 for 90 minutes. How cheap does it need to be??

Actually, it's free if you are currently suffering from cancer.

I don't have cancer and most classes are around £60

EACH CLASS???? Bloomin heck??? How do they ever get repeat business? A licence to print money!!!! Surely this fee must be for a block of classes? You need to move north! I do seated exercise classes, and like Darren, I charge £4 per hour.

Oh sorry I meant for the course! Typo! They seem to be paid by the course rather than the lesson.

I am still looking i.e. Whatley Avenue one now no longer running but emailed a U3A local link for classes. I feel that this will
be paid by the class so it just remains to be seen if they are more focused on the spiritual aspect (which I would like but it
DOES entail awareness of the breath) rather than the more physical aspect as has been indicated on this thread.

amy - any class leader, for which ever course you decide to try, should be made aware of your lung disorder, so that they can tailor exercise around your condition, or make you aware, if in a group, of movements you should moderate or leave out. I have people in my class (never more than 8 people) who have varying forms of chronic illness - several have COPD - one brings her portable oxygen, and needless to say, they are breathless much of the time. They do what they can within their limits. We are not there to build muscle or lose weight - we are their to try and establish a range of movement where previously it has been restricted. It is seated exercise, with movements done to fun music and with props. After an hours session, usually the muscles of the face are the most used, as much of the time we are laughing!

Several of my ladies also go to a weekly tai chi class, which is run in an Over 50's Day Centre - it costs £4. They tell me it's quite peaceful, and makes them think as they have to concentrate, but they enjoy the laughter in our group more!

Oh I guess you haven't read recent posts here then... Whatley Avenue refers to a post above from Richard # 31

Yes £60 seemed about the going rate for many places.

I think doing my stretching exercises more (when ache free) may be the way to go.

Thanks for this post but I am not so restricted that I can only do exercises from a chair!

I am now finding it a bit embarassing to still be asking solutions on this thread. Perhaps I should settle into just doing what I can with my stretching exercise routine (as suggested in my previous post above).

I started this thread mostly to find out how I can be ache free enough to do exercises. I have partially found the solution via an electrical massager which sorts it out when pronounced. I think I should just accept that aches are to be expected with ageing.

Thanks but Epsom is awkward for me to get to plus, as mentioned, I think I have found a way of resolving this issue as far
as is possible.
