Hi peeps
How can i stop the local cats doing their business:mad: in my garden, the other day i spent 10 minutes collecting their :eek::eek::eek: from my bedding plants and grass, not a nice job and today i had to pick some more up the was very fresh:mad:
any ideas what i can use to keep them away, other than a big scary dog:p
If a cat poos within it's territiry it will bury the poo, if it is pooing at the border of the territiry it will leave it out in the open (such as on a lawn). In the first instance it is difficult, covering newly dug grould will help and scattering (ha a pun on the word scat) chilie powder may help in a small area.
In the case of the lawn try throewing it elsewhere - it may move the border.
good luck
chris
will try the chilli powder
there is the odd poo in the mud/border areas which are semi covered and it seems to be in the same place, its killed a lot of my plants to:mad:
Some other things to consider:-
they now have their scent in your garden, try coating the garden in a very strong acidic/citrus smell (lemon is a good one). For it being a garden it likely won't ever get strong enough to deter them but they should be able to diminish the scent.
There is also a plant out there - no way on Earth I'm remembering what, but that works well to stop them.
Also if you have little rockeries or twigs down etc that is a texture the abhor on their feet and tend to avoid, etc. Also be aware that there is nothing in your bins which are initially going to attract them or attract them after you've first stopped them
found this info on the web
plants which can be used to keep cats out of the garden. These include lavender, rue, geranium, and lemon thyme.
Some gardeners also use sprays to keep cats out of the garden. Lemon or orange essence and pepper are both good cat repellents.
The advice already given is good but the plants aren't that reliable, I had a cat that loved the plants cats aren't supposed to like!
"Get Off" is a brand that makes different scented products to stop cats and dogs messing your garden. There are also sound devices out there that will keep cats out of your garden, although they are expensive. If it's your back garden and is fully fenced, you can buy plastic spikes to put on top of the fence similar to those to keep birds off window ledges. These aren't cruel, the cats just don't climb on them and if they try it, they aren't hurt.
It's worth searching HP, this question has been asked at least once or twice before so there may be other answers already on here.

Yes that is true about the plants, there is supposed to be a plant injected with something or that, really can't rememebr was a few years ago one of the people in the shelter were telling me about. But other kinds won't be enough for faeces alone as it's not enough odour in it.
One thing about the spike method, there is an alternative method which is sticks poking up in the ground - avoid that variation as although in theory it shouldn't hurt, it has happened before but the plastic/rubber spikes are good
If you actually see the cat in your garden, spray it with a water gun. Just a little bit each time and soon it won't come back again.

Sorry, I can't help laughing a little here. My next door neighbour got a cat that was using my garden as a toilet so I did the water spray thing as I also have a cat so couldn't use most methods. I gave up spraying the little so and so after about 2 years!!
That said, he really isn't scared of much, including my rottweiler!
I've always wondered, a dog owner can get fined if their dog poops and they don't clear it up, but the same doesn't apply to cat owners...... I'm sure many people let their cats out all day so they don't have to clear out said litter tray. :p
Get some lion poo from the zoo - they sell it in Colchester! - and put some in your garden. Apparently the local cat smell BIG cat and elsewhere!! Be warned though, it is, I'm told, very smelly!!

Or just buy an actual lion, sure to be more effective

Seriously though it's a valid method. Many garden centres sell lion poo pellets for that purpose.

It's called 'Silent Roar' and even Amazon sells it!

Hehehe! what a goofy fool I am! I know Derek was serious and they must sell lion poo but I read your, Janice k and Crowan's post and I am off again - giggling!
anyway thanks for giving me a belly laugh people. Hope the trick works for the poster.

I did not know that. Interesting. I wonder how large a cats territory is?
Never heard about the lion sounds great. I use old clear bottles half filled with water along my borders and this keeps the local cats out.

My daughter did this - her own cat rolled in it for a sort of aftershave and became the bully of the block thereafter!
