Hi everyone,

A friend of mine confided in me the other day that she has found a large lump on her insides after wearing her mooncup during sex. She said it might have moved out of position slightly and wondered if that could have caused enough irritation to create the lump.

I don't know much about mooncups but she has used one for 4 years.I suggested she should go for her smear test early (she is due one in a few months anyway) and to check in the meantime that it hasn't grown. I think some polyps can grow huge in a matter of days/weeks. I think she'd like to be reassured that it is something temporary caused by the mooncup but I wondered if anyone here had a similar experience?

Thanks guys (or gals, I should say!)

Catherine x

RE: Mooncup troubles

Was she using the mooncup as a contraceptive? I didn't think that this was their intended use?I thought they were for use during menstruation. Perhaps the friction (during sex) has caused the edge of the cup to aggravate the 'lump' in the vagina. She should get herself checked by the GP or practice nurse, and then maybe get measured for a cap, if she wants a better fitting contraceptive.

Catherine,

Never having used one of these mooncups, I can't say what the trouble might be, but they are meant to be used for menstruation, not contraception. Your friend will have to go for a check-up.

Patsy.

Hi,

As has already been said, the mooncup is not for use during sexual intercourse, it must be removed first.
I hope your friend is okay after she visits her healthcare practitioner.

RE: Mooncup troubles

Hi,

Thanks for all your replies. I don't think she uses it for contraception - only as a replacement fortampons. I'm thinking that perhaps she thought it was okay to have sex with it in because it stops any flow from your periods getting in the way. I asked her whether her boyfriendcould feel it and she said he could probably touch the tip -ouch- but didn't complain (poor lad)!

I will definitely reiterate my advice to her to see her GP andsuggest shecross her legs for one week of the month in future! 😉

Thanks again,
Catherine

It sits way too low to be kept in during intercourse and should be removed. She could do herself some serious damage if she's leaving it in place - and him too!

RE: Mooncup troubles

I personally think that the lump was just a big bruise inside her vagina. It happened because of the frictions against the mooncup which caused a soft tissue damage. It will go away slowly, like any other bruises you get.
She should not use it during sexual intercouse.

RE: Mooncup troubles

I cannot believe that anyone managed intercourse whilst wearing a mooncup. I would have thought it physically impossible!

Anyone not sure of the size of it - check out the picture of the women holding it on the website [link= http://www.mooncup.co.uk/ ]http://www.mooncup.co.uk/[/link].

To reiterate the other posts - your friend should definitely get herself checked out by a GP/nurse if only to rule out anything serious.
