Help!!! I suffer from debilitating exhaustion for the day before and first few days of my period. It is so bad that I just want to close my eyes and sleep and find coping with day to day impossible.
I am a vegetarian with a fairly healthy diet but wondered if there were any supplements that might help. I remember my doctor gave me large doses of B6 once and i vaguely remember that helping.
Any advice grateful as I just can't cope with the kids
Sally x

Hi,

Get yourself off to the GP and have a blood test.

I agree - get to the doctor. There might be something really wrong with you which needs a thorough examination.

I've had blood tests galore and nothing shows up. I'm not anaemic, don't have thyroid probs, hormone levels are normal! Annoying!

Hi Pooky

One of the most amazing people I know with a wealth of knowledge about womens issues is Dr Marilyn Glenville. She has written a number of books explaining the why's and wherefores and how to deal with them. It would really be helpful for you to contact her and see what she can do to help - she's very kind, understanding and approachable. There is far too much to cover in a forum like this, but suffice it to say something can definitely be done! and B6 is likely to be part of it, and Starflower oil, but there is far more to it!!

Alternatively you could read her [DLMURL="http://www.marilynglenville.com/books/index.htm"]books[/DLMURL] and see what you can try on your own - balancing your diet can make an enormous difference - or see a nutritional therapist who will be able to help considerably and guide you through the process. Personally I'd opt to see the best, Dr Glenville.

Wishing you all the best

There is "normal for everyone else" and "normal for you". What is normal for you may well not be normal for everyone else!

I've had years of this with blood tests. Finally last year I went to the doc's and asked for a hysterectomy. He referred me to a gynaecologist, who found I have adenomyosis - 3 benign tumours within the walls of my uterus - and major fibroids. I don't need a hysterectomy, I just need to take some tablets for two weeks a month. I should have put my foot down years ago, but I kept quiet because I thought it was "normal" to be ill for 17 days a month, and unable to work for 5 of those days. More fool me.

Basically what I'm saying is what you describe is not normal and you need a second (or third, or fourth in my case) opinion.

I was reading recently that it is important to eat regularly the week before and during your period to help maintain your blood sugar levels and this also helps to improve your energy levels. The foods have to be starch/carbohydrate foods. I think it's called the 3 hour diet. It is also thought to help PMS.

There is a herbal powder called Shatavari which will help you out with this, if you take it over a long time.
hope this helps

Floradix is an effective supplement for low iron and tiredness. You can get it from health food stores.
Worth a try if all your tests are clear.
