Hi
Does anyone know what level they would recommend a blood transfusion these days for aneamia. I have just had my operation cancelled due to my iron definency and have been told to take an iron supplement. My count is 7.9 now but they told me that they used to give blood transfussions for levels under 8.
Also, has anyone got any food advice that could give me an extra boost?
Thanks
RE: Level of aneamia before blood transfusion?
If you are normally healthy then will not generally transfuse unless Hb < 7.0
Remember, transfusions carry a whole load of risks - so better not to transfuse if you can avoid it.
Generally if on iron tablets you'll be looking at 3months to replenish your iron stores.
RE: Level of aneamia before blood transfusion?
foods include red meat / liver if you eat meat.
dark leafy veg (but NOT spinach! as we all tend to think) kale and broccoli are better
sesame seeds, dried apricots, red lentils, jacket potato - the skin.
One of the best supplements is called 'Spatone' - it's a natural mineral-rich water that does not cause constipation and the iron is well absorbed. You can get it in chemists.
I wouldn't let them worry you about a blood transfusion - I was given that story when my iron levels plummeted before giving birth - went below 5, but had a natural, intervention-free birth with no problems.
