I have stoped taking my contraceptive pill for over a year ago (because of photosensitivity) and when I came off, because my hormone levels changed, my skin went horrible, spotty on my face, neck and bakc sometimes etc. Still a year later it is as bad as ever, there is only one week in a month when my skin is perfectly clear and spot free.

Is this normal, shouldnt it all settle down by now?

Is there anything that I can take?

I am really good with skin care - I use dermalogica, but still my skin is pants.

I am 30 now, but my skin is worse than when I was a teanager!

Anyone else experienced this?

x

Hiya JoGirl

I can really empatize with you hun, I came off the pill after my hubby had a vastectomy and my skin went haywire. The doctor put me on all kinds of medication but nothing worked. I became friends with a district nurse and she told me to ask my doctor for Dianette. It is a contraceptive pill but it was a miracle worker. I was on that for 6 months, then came off, things remained clear for about 6 months but the spots then came back so I had to go back on.

I am still on Dianette and occasionallly I get the odd spot, so the Doctor gave me a cream call Duac. This is brilliant, it takes about a month to kick in but it really works well. I got my sister to ask her Doctor for it too and it has cleared her skin also.

RE: Coming off Pill and Acne

Hi,

I am 30 and suffering right now with exactly the same problem. Except I can't go back on Dianette (was on it for 10 years - oops) because I am trying for a baby. This only leaves creams which don't seem to be doing anything except dry out my skin. Now my foundation (which I need to cover the spots) is looking caked/flaky. If I exfoliate too much or wear moisturiser, I get oil slicks and more spots.

Please someone tell me this will settle down soon? It's been 9 months now. It appears on my face and back and the spots are soooo painful. They seem to have wrapped their roots around my jaw and stick around for weeks, leaving a pinky-purple mark when they finally go. I look worse than when I was a teenager and have wrinkles to contend with now - at least then I had otherwise smooth skin and tight pores![:@]

Sorry, JoGirl - I really empathise with you. I'll try to get the recommended cream (thanks Angel) and let you know the results in a few months.

Any others out there with this cruel affliction?

Catherine

Hi Jo Girl

Its good that you have come off the pill, I was on it for 8 yrs (on and off) and came off about 4 yrs ago, I must say my skin has gone through different stages, after about a year it was awful, had to take antibiotics cos i wouldnt go back on the pill, then the antibiotics didnt agree with me. I used to use clearasil, I know its prob full of rubbish but it did help at the time. Then it cleared up, except near periods.

I think its a lot to do with hormones, my skin is much better now, unless im stressed, tired and not eating as well as I usually do. And near the periods it gets worse. The more I worried and picked the worse it got.

I actually use the Olay range now, I wash my face every day with the exfoliating scrub I then use the toner in the same range and a really light mouisteriser. I also try and use a clean towel everyday to pat my face dry.

My skin is quite congested and I had a guinot facial a while ago and this made a difference, I must book one again soon.

I try and drink water and Avoid fatty foods, even thou they say that this has nothing to do with bad skin..

Also I dont wear foundation, I just but bronzer on my cheeks, if i do get a spot I use the Witch conceler stick. Wearing make up makes my skin worse, Ialway get a break out after a night out and Ive put foundation on.

Anyway Hope this helps andit gets better soon.

Hi

That is the pill that was originally on, Diannete, and decided to come off as aparently it is dangerous for a long time and it was causing pigmentation. Diannete is a contraceptive pill, so wanting to come off to give my body a break.

Next time I go to docs I will ask for Duac.

Thank you. x

Catherine

Sounds like you have same problem as me. I recommend also going for a nice facial once a month - purifying with extractions, and using dermalogica products, they have really helped. I am going to ask the doc for Duac though.

Try Dermalogica foundation too. They do a liquid one. It is expensive but worth it. If you go to a beuty place that sells dermalogica, or have a facial, ask them for some free samples- i have had lots of sachets in the past, to try and test before I bought. They also to a tinted moistuiser too.

I was on Dianette for that long too. I am 30 and feel like a spotty teenager. Aparently adult acne is very common though.

JoGirl, I know this is quite an old thread now but could I ask it you tried Duac and who effective it was for you please? My wife suffers from exactly the same symptoms described on here and she has tried all sorts of things to help sort it out with out much success.

Thank you

Dave

Dave can I just jump in here and say I have been on Duac for over a year now (with no other medication) and the spots are kept at bay. I get the odd one or two but i think that is hormonal as they only pop up at certain times of the month. The Duac is brilliant and I have reccomended to 4 people who swear by it now.

I also reccomended it to my friend's daughter as she is suffering terrible and she is only 11, but she felt it was burning her skin, so stopped using it.

Personally I've had no problems with it and have gone from using it twice daily to twice weekly and it is still working.
