Hi everyone

As I'm almost joining the 40 club I was wondering does anyone take any Collagen supplements? I've saw a liquid supplement which provides 10 000mg of pure Hydrolysed Collagen per serving and wondering should we be taking this?

My diet is fairly good and I take Omega 3/6/9 and chewable Vitamin C and Calcium supplements. I normally juice every morning (usually carrot, apple, celery, beetroot)

I'd love too hear anybody's views on taking this liquid Collagen and whether it's beneficial or not?

Thanks

I would suggest taking this supplement is a con. Coals to Newcastle comes to mind!

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is responsible for the integrity of 'ground substance', tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and is the support structure for skin and blood vessels. So what you should be looking for - if you feel you really need it - are the support nutrients to prevent it being damaged by inflammation, free radicals and allergies.

These nutrients include vitamin C and flavonoids which have shown remarkable ability to support collagen structures by supporting and encouraging the cross-linking of collagen fibres and preventing their breakdown by free radicals.

So, continue to do your juicing which is an excellent way of getting these flavonoids - and make sure you include fruit/veg of the red and purple range. Grazing on berries and cherries is another way to help. A quality diet should supply you with adequate intake of copper which is also required. Adequate protein intake is needed too.

I'd avoid tobacco smoke which is notorious for damaging skin, too much sunshine as in outdoors in the tropics (highly unlikely in UK!), fried foods, and sugar and sugary foods including white flour goods as they rob your body of nutrients to process them in their metabolic breakdown.

Oily fish or omega-3 supplement is the other necessity, and avoid any manufactured fats which only block the functioning of essential oils (however much advertising is thrown at us ). A quality multivitamin/multimineral should supply a range of readily-absorbed nutrients and include vitamins A and E for skin support.

After all this you will still be looking beautiful well past retiring age and saved yourself a fortune in supplements and face creams :D.

I'd be wary of taking calcium without magnesium unless it has been prescribed for a particular reason.

Welcome to 40's club! Life starts at 40.
As for Callogen supplement, it is naturally available and abundantly so in orange peel and pith. I am not a fan of fruit but when I do have an occasional orange, I have the entire fruit, because I like it that way. That is more collagen that fancy priced supply of a month.
