Hi all

Can anyone recommend a treatment/remedy for fungal nail infections that does not damage your liver? I went to the GP recently about my toenails and she prescribed tablets (tho can't remember what they're called). I looked it up on the net before taking them and it said "can cause liver damage" so I didn't use them. Problem is.... the infection is still there. I've been too embarrassed to go the GP in the past, but it's now preventing me from doing various complementary therapies ie. reflexology as it's contraindicated. I didn't realise what it was until fairly recently - just thought I had ugly feet! I'd love to be able to wear open-toed sandals in the summer and would like to do reflexology soon.

I have done a full body massage course and had to wear verucca socks on the massage couch - so embarrassing!

Please let me know if there is anything that works.

Love
Charisma

Fungal nail infection

For anyone with an infection try Canesten Solution 20ml ~ available at your pharmacy. I have had an infection on my big toe nail and went to the pharmacy for Curanail (which is very expensive) the pharmacist said I should try the Canesten solution at a 5th of the price, so I did ~ I apply it twice a day and the infection has nearly gone, just waiting while the new nail grows, a few more weeks and it will be gone.

Hi Gardeningnut and welcome to Healthypages,

Whilst Canesten may work, it's not exactly a complementary/natural treatement, and contains non natural ingredients/chemicals.

Even my own chiropodist recommeded using Tea Tree oil rather than anything pharmaceutical, which took me by surprise. She said Tea Tree worked more effectively.

Of course if the infection has got really serious, one should always seek medical advise, though applying Tea Tree will still help, as it's naturally antiseptic and antifungal.

All Love and Reiki Hugs

Nail Fungus Treatments

Oral medication can indeed cause side effects IF you have other ailments and is taking other medicines. I've heard of an effective, pain free and fast treatment that can kill the fungi and won't take as much time when compared to those topical creams/lotions/polish/lacquer. All you have to do is sit down and t infected area will be exposed to a special light. You won't feel a single prick! It's called Lunula Cold Laser and the other was Pinpointe Footlaser. I've heard it's offered in The London Nail Laser CLinic. Here's a link to their website if you want more info: Fungal Nail Laser Nail treatment

I hope I helped. 🙂

Eradicating fungal nail

It's true the tablets are bad for your liver in fact your doctor would have had to perform regular liver function tests had you continued with that option.

There are many home remedies out there and indeed some may work if the infection is mild i.e. on a very small part of say one nail. If as was in my case you have many toes infected you'll be fighting a losing battle. The fungus lives in and under the toenail making it almost impossible to target directly. I've tried listerine, vicks, tea tree oil, oat baths, nail lacquers you name it but none worked. Not even slightly. The safe and side effect free way is to change the environment of the toenail. not sure if I can post links but the address is . It tells you exactly how to do it.

It did take 3-4 weeks to clear though and the nail has to grow out so be patient but as I said it's the only real solution apart from these ghastly tablets!

So i'd start now as there are more important things to be worrying about in this world apart from fungal nails. Let me know if you need more info,

Jasmine.

Fungal infection happens in your toenails because they are always damp and warm. This combination creates suitable breeding grounds for fungus. Different kinds of fungus, bacteria and even yeast infect different parts of the nail.
Here are a few natural remedies that are cost friendly and easily available from home.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
2. Oil of Oregano
3. Tea Tree Oil
4. Coconut Oil

I can confirm Vics Vapour Rub really does work for fungal nail infections. I tried everything on the market and could not get rid of it. Didn't want to take the tablets. I was then told to try the rub, thin layer on the nail and under the nail once daily. It really does work. Only downside was my nails turned black after a couple of days where I had the fungus. Fortunately it doesn't last long as the fungus soon dies and healthy nail grows in its place. Lot cheaper than all the products I have brought as well.

Candida is by far leading source of Toenail FungusandCinnamon slays Candida, including antibiotic opposed to Candida. And best of this herb is that it can be consumed internally (as black tea infused by way of cinnamon bark oil, sticks poached into tea or powder) to fix internal roots and employ Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf Oil in order to remove or kill ugly toenails bacterial infections. Cassia Cinnamon has high Coumarin levels but Ceylon Cinnamon has lowand this also makes it safer for your liver.

Hi I also had fungal toe nail infection, the Dr's prescribed many mild medication, varnish type liquids to apply to the nail but none worked. it got to a point i was limping at times when I was walking and my toe nails hurt. Later my toe nails started seperating from my nail bed. I even cut my toe nails really short cos I thought they were hurting because my toe nails were long.

Anyway if you are experiencing pain and torture like i did. Then talking the tablets which may effect your liver would be the solution. Your doctor should have told you to have a liver check/text done first before prescribing those tablets. and after the one month period they do anyone liver text to see if you are ok and if needed they continue further with the tablets. When I went to india years ago they suggested the same tablets and course of action.

Within a month of starting the course of the tablets I could see a big difference and nail started to reattach to my nail bed.

Hello! You're off to a good start by trying out tea tree oil. I think a blend of that with oil of oregano (that contains carvacrol) is a really powerful way to eliminate toe fungus naturally.

If you want a complete guide on how to get rid of toenail fungus using essential oils you should check out this website >

You could also try tea tree oil foot soaks which are great because sometimes it can get the hard to reach places like under your nail.

If you are looking for an OTC ointment, a cheap one that I recommend using is tolnaftate.
