Hi All
Can anyone advise, my husband has been suffering with a tight chest for quite a while now. It seems to be worse at night and in the morning. He gets a bit of cough. Its not painful just a tight feeling, he is very sporty and is a cyclist and triathlete, it does not seem to affect his performance at all. He was given an asthma pump at the pharmacy - it seems to help a little bit but its not clearing up. What do you think it could be? Is it possible to develop Asthma at the age of 30? He does not smoke.
Any advice would be great.
Thanks
My 22 year old daughter had chest pain last weekend, so rang NHS 24 to seek advice (I note you are in South Africa, so don't know if you have a similar service). Anyway, she was told in no uncertain terms to get to an A&E department asap, if necessary, call an ambulance. As she was only 10 minutes drive from the hospital, she drove herself. NHS 24 had called ahead, and they were waiting for her arrival. She was taken immediately to 'Resus', given an ECG then an Xray, then an ultra-sound of her heart........ she had called me, and I was outside in the waiting room. We live in Scotland, and the health authority take chest pain very seriously. Luckily, all was well with her heart, but they thought that she may have pulled an intercostal muscle, which can be extremely painful and mimic a heart problem (!).
My advice would be to get himself checked out asap. Just because he is fit doesn't mean there couldn't be a problem.
Also, my mother developed asthma aged 35, and she didn't smoke either.
Sounds typical of asthma, but I should get it checked out with the GP and if it gets worse at any time and your worried, I should get him checked out asap.
Blessings
Thanks all, yes it seems to be asthma will send him to a specialist to check him over.
Also possible
Hi there,
It depends of how long the pain lasts each time it comes on?..also if it is felt as a crushing pain or some thing that starts in the centre of his chest but soon radiates to the neck, jaw and even arms?..
It could be Angina Pectoris..as anything sever would have resulted in (without worrying you)..him being taken to the hospital by now. ..
As well as Asthma, he could also be suffering from ..slight collapsing of the lungs..this is more prominant in people who are very active and exert more from their Cardiovascular system..
Night/evening is where the body goes about repaire and any draining of the fluid in his pulmonary cavities..which explains the pain during these times.
Some times if we sleep awkwardly , this can happen as the intercostal area is put under additional mechanical stress and strain ..
Good Lung capacity test , and test for asthma would rule these out too..I am glad you are seeking specialist's advice !
Stay well
warm wishes
