Hello esteemed practitioners

I would love your thoughts or recommendations on sinus problems. It seems to be my 'weak spot,' whenever I'm run down or catch a cold then I suffer from recurring sinusitis. I recently had nasty bought which lasted a week and a half and I still can't shake it off.

Symptoms are stuffy head, face and head pains, sore, dry throat, catarrh, constant nose blowing, tiredness and so on.

Over the years I've tried homeopathy, flower remedies, olbas/eucalyptus oil, antibiotics (eek), steam inhalation. I intend to try Hopi ear candles but intrigued whether you have any more pointers?

With many sniffly thanks
Welshbee x

RE: Sinus problems

Glad you found it. It wasn't that you Posted in the wrong place exactly, it's more a case of - reality being that people cannot be separated into individual parts/areas in the hope of making sense of the whole. [sm=banghead.gif]

But we needed some sort of categories to try make it easier for folks to find stuff. So you just highlighted one of the many areas of overlap within the Health & Ailment Forums. [&:]

The Forum Search function under the Forum button (top of Page ) is always useful when looking for something specific. I digress.

With all the other localised symptoms you're getting it does sound very much like you have a stiff upper neck, that can create havoc with the sympathetic & other nerves that feed back into the head. 😮

Headaches, facial, jaw, sinus pain & muzzyness - referred pain. [:@]

Sore throat - tight muscles in neck - poor lymph drainage & affecting blood supply to throat & mucous membranes, impeding drainage of inflammation from the area. 😉

After that, if it's still a recurrent problem, then you may be looking at food sensitivities or allergies, so check the Allergy Forum - they're not always obvious & NAET treatment is proving to be a solution for these. 😉

I've a bias for osteopathy to actually release the joints & preserve their health, but some good soft tissue work from a massage therapist should help ease the immediate problem. Also, cranial osteopathy would help drain the sinuses, if they are getting congested &/or infected, but it is by far more common to be a referred pain from neck senario. Actually washing out the sinuses has fallen out of favour with the medics. I've only ever treated one person that has said that actually helped them. Many years ago I had mine done 3 times (had company private health care at the time - there may be a link) and they just got worse each time. Probably because that wasn't the problem. What didn't was the consultant saying, in front of his understudy, that I must just be someone who produces a lot of mucous! DOH! [sm=banghead.gif]

No suggestion of possible allergies or intolerance or even that it may be referred pain, but he got paid an awful lot just the same. [:o]

Good luck - Andrew. 🙂

RE: Sinus problems

Hi Andrew
Thanks for such a detailed posting and for opening up some new avenues to investigate! In particular, I hadn't considered neck stiffness but this does make sense due to recent life incidents causing some tension! [sm=scratchchin.gif]

Interestingly, I am leaning towards investigating food sensitivity/ allergies as I also suffer from skin disorders. Having spent years applying lotions and potions to the outside I'm more and more aware that it's essential to work from the inside aswell.

So, at least I have a practical list now, including cranial osteopathy and nutrition advice for starters.

Again, thanks for your reply and I'll let you know if any progress.

RE: Sinus problems treated with Bowen Technique London

be aware that dairies, eggs and (often) bananas could aggreviate your sinus problems - as well as cold and swimming. Wearing hat would be advisable at this time of year.

In the Bowen technique there is a procedure which you can compare to washing out sinuses but dry - just by emptying the neck from all stagnated lymph and allowing all the gunk from sinuses to drain down.

The main part of this procedure is downward movement around/under the Sterno Cleido Mastoid muscle - which resembles 'milking a cow') - as well as along larynx and freeing the trachea.

Unfortunately (unlike other conditions treated with Bowen) it takes 7 - 8 treatments to sort out sinuses - permanently.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know much about the Bowen technique but I think it is worth a try, I will search for a practitioner unless anyone can recommend someone in the North London area?

The tip about bananas was also useful. I must admit that there is a definite improvement since eliminating wheat products, cutting right down on dairy (can't resist a drop of skimmed milk in tea though!). I've also cut out oranges and orange juice. However, I do eat bananas - sometimes knowing what to snack on becomes impossible when you cut out so many foodgroups. Will reduce my intake of bananas then and report back!
Thanks for your advice

Hi,

Just to add that Indian Head Massage can work wonders with sinus problems.... As Andrew points out the neck could be a suspect! IHM covers the upper back, shoulders, neck and importantly for sinus probs - scalp, face and ears.

try a simple self ear massage next time your sinus's are bothering you - gently grasp both ears at the top and pull up (gently!) and then move a little further down the ear an pull up and out till you reach the lobe wher you are pulling down. This will: help your sinus conjestion..... stimilate all you senses..... up you concentration levels... and generally feel nice 🙂

If in real discomfort - try sinex nasel spray....

Sinex Nasal Spray is a very temporary solution and if used over a period of time can do damage to the nasal lining.

Olbas Oil is an excellent alternative and better IMHO for when you're bunged up.

And.
