I have really been suffering with my sinusis for the last 3 weeks I've been told that I need to cut out mucus forming food - i've been told Bananas are one of these which is quite interesting as I eat 1 or more a day!! Can anybody tell me what other foods I should avoid? (I don't drink milk or have much cheese)

I've searched on the net but can't seem to find anything to help me?

RE: Sinus and mucus

Try searching for 'Sinusitis' ... It's the medical term for blocked sinuses and means 'inflammation of the sinuses'. There are lots of alternative health sites dealing with it, and they give quite a few useful remedies! Good luck and let me know if you find anything helpful as I also suffer from it!

RE: Sinus and mucus

You are right, dairy products and bananas can both cause mucous.

Steaming with Olbas Oil is very good as is ear candling and reflexology.

Hi Purple Yoga,

Bananas and dairy are mucus forming. Sugar is also something to avoid (I know, it's all over the place!). Alcohol cam also have a blocking effect.
Have you changed anything in your diet arround the time it started?

Thanks for your reply! No i didn't change my diet as far as I am aware although I was going out drinking quite a bit!

Since it happened i cut out dairy and sugar and that helped but i find it so difficult cutting out sugar especially when I enjoy my chocolate muffins!

RE: Sinus and mucus

Hi folks!

Mucus forming foods:
All dairy products (goat's dairy is less mucus-forming)
Soya alternatives also can be mucus forming
Wheat
Bananas
All citrus fruits and juices
Peanut butter
Sugar

Things that help the digestive systems turn these foods into energy rather than mucus:
Eating regulary (3 meals a day at roughly the same time each day)
Not eating too close to bedtime
Minimising raw and cold foods (including room temperature foods)
Prioritising warm cooked foods
Avoiding eating whilst reading/working/watching TV/stressed/arguing etc!

I believe it's important to remember that most things are fine in moderation, but certainly cutting out the worst offenders for a few weeks can give you good information on how these foods affect you.

Good luck!

Hi Aragorn,

What's your take on mushrooms and mucus ("Dampness")? I've heard conflicting info.
Do you count tofu as a "Soya alternative"? Or do you mean the processed soya that tries to pretend to be meat?

RE: Sinus and mucus

Hi Artemis
Mushrooms... hmm. I'd say they are slightly Damp-forming, but that it's very much a matter of degree.
If you think about the conditions in which they grow, and the fact they are fungi, then it makes sense to regard them as Damp, but I don't tend to think of them when advising patients about Damp-forming diets, probably because there are more common perpetrators! (wheat, dairy). I can see how someone with a very mushroom-heavy diet may experience Damp problems due to the mushrooms.

By soya alternatives, I meant dairy alternatives: I was actually thinking of soya milk and yogurts. It has been my experience that sometimes people are proud to have cut out dairy, only to find their Damp problem remains unaffected. Turns out they have simply substituted dairy for a soya alternatives.

Tofu is energetically Cold, and so it wouldn't help a person with a tendency to mucus. I don't regard it as being particularly Damp-forming in its own right.

All just my experience and opinion - very happy to be corrected on the subject;)

Thanks for the clarification.
I often find that energetic properties of foods can be very confusing...
