re emphysema
Hi Missy, Cysteine which is in eggs has a way of breaking down mucus so is very beneficial in the treatment of emphysema. It is important to ensure that the immune system is helped as much as possible so vitamin c 1gram per day (1000mg) plus zinc supplements and green tea tablets will help.
Hope this helps
Hi Missy
It is lovely that you want to help your mother and are already doing so with what you have told us. A bit more advice may help:
If your mother smokes - she MUST stop and avoid all contact with tobacco smoke. It reduceS oxygen intake and her lungs are already damaged, so cannot absorb it efficiently.
A diet of 50% raw foods, with the rest made up of soups and steam-stirfrys, skinless chicken and turkey, fish, eggs, brown rice, millet and wholegrain cereals; onions and garlic daily; avoid fried and greasy foods, salt and mucus-forming foods like dairy produce including cheese, processed foods, red meats, junk foods and anything made with white flour. Reduce gas-forming foods such as beans and cabbage that can sause abdominal distention which can make breathing more difficult.
She should avoid being in the house while it is being cleaned to reduce contact with dust and cleaning chemicals which may aggravate the situation. Reduce contact with all dust, mold, aerosols, plastics, perfumes, known allergens and furry animals - all of which can make things worse. Avoid people who have colds, sore throats, etc.
Exercise, starting very gently and increasing by small amounts can increase endurance, improve circulation and generally reduce breathlessness. Even a minute ot two hourly can help, and yoga or tai chi are good.
A qualified herbalist will advise on suitable herbal supplements such as astragallus and cordyceps and suitable teas. A quality multivitamin/multimineral supplement will be necessary to help reduce her lung inflammation and increase her antioxidant status. Omega-3 and -6 oils will help cell rebuilding and a chlorophyll supplement help clear breathing. There are other supplements, but you would be best to consult a BANT registered nutritional therapist for specific advice for her requirements.
Wishing you both the best of health
Hi, a bit late in reply
It is a difficult illness, ionisers help, car fumes can irritate it a lot more and getting out and about can be difficult.
I suggets an oil burner or a plug in armomatic compatible ioniser, i would add frankincense to this as it encourages deep breathing and may assist the breathing exercises you say your mother is doing.
Also Clarysage aromatherapy oil (salvea sclarea)....(which is quite potent therefore be sure to mix it as recommended) Is good as it is a vaso-dilator and will help open airways and soothe bronchial passsage, this would be good in an aromatherapy blend rubbed on her back.
I would take 2 drops of clary sage, 1 drop of vetivert, 1 drop of tea tree oil, 1 drop of eucalyptus and 1 drop of lemon grass and mix with 20 mil of sweet almond oil and rub this synergy blend 3 times a day, this one blend should be used as to last a few days.
Spirulina is expensive but a good immuno booster or tincture of olive leaf extract to ward off infections viruses and tonify immunity.
I would also encourage your mother to try take up an artistic hobby that she enjoys and encourage reading, if she can manage short walks go along and take your time to look up and see the birds in the sky and be in the moment as stress or anxiety can make a persons chest tighten and it is important she is relaxed - I would recommend reflexology - go watch and then in time you could possibly give foot massage to your mother as relaxation itself deepens breathing and you will also be assisting in encouraging her healing mechanisms to their optimum without realising .... I would probably add 1 to 2 drops of frankincense to 10 ml of sweet almond oil to aid relaxation and deep breathing, it is the out breathe that the emphasis should be upon, breathe out slowly emptying lungs and the in breath will follow.
Pranayama has some very good techniques
Good luck, Hope your mother manages this illness as to increase the quality of her day to day activities
Oh with aromatherapy oils I find tisserand to the best quality at the best price, be sure it is natural and not synthetic from whom you purchase
Tincture of olive leaf not good if low blood pressure, /If your mother smokes then I would make her chew carrot sticks in replace of ciggys or chew dried fruit/berries, just as a replacement for the mouth.
I dont know how severe the emphysema is or how long she has had this and whether she can walk far for long or this limited due to breathlessness, everything should be small steps - concentrate on bringing as much positivity in.
Clarysage too can be containdicated for low blood pressure but the synergy of the blend I recommended should level this out, try it first once and see how she feels
Take Care you sound like a sweet person looking out for their mother that is lovely!

alks123, could you possibly expand a little on this, give a slightly fuller explanation, as some readers may not understand the technicalities of acupuncture. Further information about this massage you're recommending would I'm sure be appreciated. Can you describe the massage more fully?
Many thanks 🙂
Holistic
The massage is done by smth like tip of a pencil, clock and anticlockwise
for tone up/sedation, the points are 2-3 mm in size and may be located
(in Su-jok) on fingers joints lines, easy to find by non-specialist.
One may also do moxas, but this is much stronger (good for the case) so one is to exercise to work with cigars on smth less serious like headache.
No offence but the moxas may be irritant to the alveoli of the lungs
That's right, one may use a fan or do it
outdoors.
I would like to say thankyou to you all for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. My mum's breathing has been so/so. Regular aromatherapy massaging has definitely helped and i had already encouraged her to cut back on dairy and i think it is helping. Stress plays such a huge part in agrevating this condition and we have been looking at meditation recently too.
I am thinking about taking her to see a herbalist, been using shiastu and reflexology also.
