Hi Everyone,
Hope I have posted this in the right place... My aunt suffers from very bad Asthma. She is a chronic asthmatic. I was wondering if there are any natrual remedies that could help her? She is such an amazing person and I hate seeing her suffer so much.
Any advise is welcome!!!! 🙂
Much love,
Leigh x~x~x
RE: Asthma
Look at the Buteyko method. There's plenty about it on the net, and also a couple of books - I've lent mine out at the moment so I'm not sure what it's called. This is my precis of the book :Asthma was virtually unknown before the 50s-60s. The basic proposition is that Asthma is over-diagnosed, and that patients are given steroids and other medication that messes up their ability to breathe without them, and they over-breathe, the lungs fill with mucus and they need the medication to widen the airways. This weakens the lungs' ability to work as nature intended, anad so they need medication and so on. The B method teaches a way of controlling breathing, and helps them get off the medication, and breath normally. They do courses and offer support while you come off the medication. You can look at the rise of asthma as a conspiracy by the drug companies for profit.
Good luck to your Auntie,
Sharon.
RE: Asthma
Hi Leigh
I have a good breathing meditation (that can be brought across into waking world)) which is along the lines of Buteyko. It opens the chest cavity to allow you to breath as you are meant to, using the diaphram. I also had bad asthma up until I started doing tai chi as this also aids with breathing as you have to control breath to do the stances right etc! There is also a specific tai chi internel form that can help with asthma and is aligned to the Internal five element form! It is hard to explain how you do it but I will have a good go if you want! vut depends where you aunt lives.
PM me if you think that your aunt would benefit from the breathing exercise. But I would recommend tai chi or chi gong!
With love

RE: Asthma
A friend of mine has recently done buteyko and whilst she has said it has taught her to breath more deeply and she is able to calm herself down if she is stressed it has not sadly had an affect on her asthma, although each to their own, what works in one will not work in another......monitored excercise to increase capacity slowly is very good.....

Thank you for your thoughts Tigerbee. I do agree that differnt things work for different people. I hope we find something that works for her.
RE: Asthma
Hello spinal music,
I am not sure whether asthma is a condition that doctors diagnose simply to prescribe more drugs. I am asthmatic, but mine is hereditary. My grandma suffered all her life with it, and she was born in the late 19th century. She died of an asthma-related disease in 1950.
My own feeling about asthma is that some people are prone to suffer with it and some are not. Pollution, allergy, sunshine, stress - these are my 'triggers.'
I am a singer and because singing involves controlled breathing, I am able to control my asthma that way. Deep breathing of any sort controls it, but I still need medication.
Love,
Patsy.

RE: Asthma
Hi Songstress : I think it is the massive escalation of the problem that is the phenomenon caused by the medication. (I'll have to get this book back to check the statistics, but they were alarming.) I was talking to people in their 70s a couple of weeks ago - they couldn't remember asthma being a problem when they were growing up. In the book it says that it's not just a pollution problem either: it's found just as much in the countries where there is less pollution, but where asthma medication is provided to the young for chest infections, and then the roller coaster begins.
The Buteyko method has you breathing less rather than deep breathing: I know that's rather counter-intuitive - but his theory is that if you breathe too deeply the balance of O2 and CO2 is disturbed. It's rather complicated to do with chemical processes at cellular level, and I know I'm not doing it justice. Think of the remedy for panic attacks - breathing into a paper bag - topping up the balance of CO2 - he gave other examples on those lines, which made sense.
One of his methods is to tape the mouth shut at night, so you only breathe through your nose, as asthmatics tend to breathe through the mouth, take up too much O2, which their bodies can't process properly, so their lung linings make more mucus which leads to an attack.
Anyway, I've just started taking singing lessons, and I loved learning how to use the stomach muscles to control the breathing and support the voice. I'm a Pilates teacher and it all inter-relates.
I'll put the title of the book up when I find it!
Sharon.

woopynookum & all asthmatics
try the Bowen technique - especially effective with kids - it can be self-applied in an emergency as well.
My Bowen teacher, Alastair Rattray, runs his website where the whole asthma procedure is described step by step

RE: Asthma
Thank you will give that a try too!

RE: Asthma
I took my son to Alastair Rattray for asthm atreatment with The Bowen Technique. I have never seen anything so amazing in all my life as the change it made to this 13yo lad. He had about 6 chest infections the previouse year, needing steroids and antibiotics, last year he had nothing except run of the mill colds, and even those werent often! I went on to train in bowen and am now qualified. My son has treatments when he needs them, he even asks me! it stopped his night time coughing in its tracks, his chest relaxed an opened out, his whole posture chanegd after that first session with alastair! The emergency procedure is on his website and can be very helpful for all sorts of problems, like panic ttcks as well as asthma. I used it when I was giving a tlk, as I was a bit nervous and couldnt breath properly.
Simple but effective
