I hope it's OK to post this here, at least initially. I checked in Ailments and the last post in Repiratory was in mid-April. I believe that here it might be more widely seen.

Can anyone please give me any information on the side effects of ipratropium bromide, one of the two active ingredients in my new combined inhaler, the other being salbutamol sulphate with which I have had no problem.
I felt quite ill after using this combined one yesterday for the first time, experiencing some of the contraindications listed in the manufacturer's leaflet - nausea, cough, dizziness, dry mouth.

A lengthy internet search seemed to provide info. from the manufacturers' points of view only. They state that the product is not absorbed into the body. So why the side-effects? Can anyone shed any light? Thanks.

Oops! Forgot to add that I was a bit heavy handed with the bleach in the kitchen sink, which usually makes me gasp a bit, but quickly recover. Could the combination of the two be a factor? The ipratropium is still my main interest, though.

RE: Advice re inhaler, please

Adverse Reactions to Ipatropium Steri-Neb as listed in MIMS June 2001.

* Occasional paradoxical broncho spasm.

* Dry mouth

* Constipation

* Urinary retention.

There may be more in more recent literature! 😮

Just because a particular adverse reaction isn't listed, doesn't mean that it isn't one. The Yellow Document Report system is over 30 years older & woefully under used, probably as prescribing doctors are so busy. [&:]

At end of day if it's making you ill - it's making you ill & you should report it for your own health & in the hope that others can avoid similar reactions. [:'(]

If your asthma is asthma related - you mentioned your reaction to bleach - take a look in the Allergies subforum, because there are treatments that may help. 😉

Andrew.

PS I didn't move this Post, but was about to. Several of the Ailment subforums have only older threads at present, because we have started moving all the old ones first. This will still show up as a recent Thread. Andrew.

RE: Advice re inhaler, please

Thank you very much for your prompt reply - I know you didn't move the post, I had an email to that effect just before you replied.

The original inhaler, Salbutamol, was prescribed for occasional use when, as you rightly suggested over the bleach, I had a asthmatic reaction to some household products, perfumes and aftershaves, diesel fumes. Following bronchitis earlier this year, the doc. switched me to this combined one, first dose of which was a disaster.

I have not taken it since, I am almost totally recovered today, but still wondering about the apparent discrepancy between "known contraindications" and "the product is not absorbed by the body". To my mind this does not add up, which is why I was asking for information, something along the lines of What Doctors Don't Tell You. I will be telling mine of my reaction.

In view of my increased sensitivity, I will do further research based on the threads in this forum.

Thank you again for your help.

Anything you can dig up would be greatly appreciated on this forum and a good place to start would be What Doctors Don't Tell You -

I only wish I had time to study & write on all indidivual problems.

Did you you mean your asthma has cleared up or just the recent exacerbation?

I'm away for a few days now ( should have already gone - another story) but will be back soon.

And.

RE: Advice re inhaler, please

Hey guys,

I know this is gonna sound really stupid but I've had asthma since I was 11 and had 2 near-death experiences due to attacks. For the past 6 months I've been drinking Penta water and I have to say, and I'm not the type of person to endorse "products", but my asthma has been significantly helped but this stuff. Weird or wot!? I can actually go to the gym 4 times a week without feeling like a bag of poo. It's the only thing that I've changed in my usually healthy-eating lifestyle and my hayfever is not so bad this year too.

Has anyone else tried it and had similar results? I'd love to hear from you to know that it's not all in my head - cos I'm sure it's not 🙂

Hiya
Welcome to Hp, I saw your other post on the water thread and whilst I do not wish to dispute what you so obviously feel as a great benefit you will see a post there from someone who actually works with the firm and that this does not make medical claims except in relation to dehydration....

Do pop along to new members and introduce your self...

HI Tigerbee
Yeah I saw that post from someone who works there and looked at their website too.....without specific research results no company can make medical claims otherwise they'll probably get sued!! I am just wondering if there is a link between lack of hydration in the body and asthma because if you're blood is around a 7.0 ph then you get optimum cell longevity. It's all facinating stuff. I suppose if your cells are fully hydrated then all the gasious exchanges in the lungs must improve.

Toodle-pip for now.
🙂

Anahata:

My apologies for the delay in my response, and belated thanks. You said:

I have subscribed to their newsletter, and will post anything I find relevant.

I only wish I had time to study & write on all indidivual problems.

You and me both!!! I also wish I had time to read all the newsletter to which I subscribe - see above.

Did you you mean your asthma has cleared up or just the recent exacerbation?

I meant that within a couple of days I had recovered from the recent exacerbation. My asthma is ongoing, but very occasional and in reaction to products as given in my earlier post. Avoidance is preferred to medication, eg leaving a good distance between my car and the smelly lorry in front of me.

I have been back to the doctor who wants me to try again with the combined inhaler - without bleach on the side! My feeling is a bit yeah, yeah, when I can spare two days to run the risk of the side effects again. I am, however, now wearing a face mask when using anything like bleach or limescale remover - which is minimal, anyway, on environmental grounds.

pussyism and TigerBee:

Thanks to you too. I think there might be something in this water/dehydration thing, whether Penta or my usual filtered tap water, and I know I should be drinking more. Problem then is having a mental map of all the available "watering holes" when I go out! 😀 I'll read up on Penta, anyway, and keep you posted regarding any changes I note re the water/asthma link.

Renewed thanks to everyone,

Holistic

One way around the drinking water problem is to always carry a sports bottle of water with you everywhere.

No excuses! 😉

My apologies for my choice of words: "Watering holes". Perhaps "pit stops" might have been better. Serves me right for trying to combine discretion with clever puns! 😉

The problem is not getting the water IN if I'm out, it's finding somewhere appropriate to let it OUT again if taken short. Oh dear, let's be blunt - I need to know where the nearest loo/hedge is!!! :D:D:D Sorry if I misled you ...

Laura 😀

Take your point, but your body will get used to the amount of water you put in and initially you will need to find a loo quite often, but after a while, this settles down.

Also if you keep your bottle with you and sip the water little and often (in the way that our bodies use the water), rather than go an hour or two and then have a big glass, you will find that the cells and tissues are able to use the water more effectively, with less passing through.

Useful hint, little and often, many thanks for that, I'll try it. It sounds to me like what happens if I let my house plants dry out too much - the water I pour in just goes straight through the compost into the saucer underneath.

Gosh, do you not realise bleach is carcinogenic. you should especially not be inhaling it or using it so it makes you gasp! there are other more organic, natural things on the market to use that do not promote cancer and are safe to use.

re inhalers - if you are having side effects i would come off it and speak with your GP. yogic breathing can help asthmatics and something called buteko breathing ( i think!). i use inhalers but i try and manage asthma which is controlled, by using breathing techniques. try and avoid going near and breathing in harsh chemicals. it really doesnt help. your GP should be able to sort out an alternative inhaler for you. drinking water helps asthmatics as the lungs are often dry. if they are kept moist is helps keep the airways open and surrounding muscles relaxed.

Best wishes

Tammy

Tammy

Can you recommend safe alternatives to bleach, please? I've noted your suggestions re breathing techniques, and thank you.

Lesley

Do forgive me - I got a mental picture of your client standing over a saucer while you poured a canful of water into his/her open mouth. ROFL. 😀 Sorry, I'll get my coat ..... seriously, glad to know I grasped what you were trying to tell me.

Laura.

BTW, this is the second time I've typed this - the first vanished into cyberspace behind Page Not Available. So if it appears in duplicate, as has happened before, it will be after I've logged off and gone to bed. [:@]

Interesting advice about the water - I'm terrible at forgetting to drink enough. I even have a book called Your Body's Many Cries for Water by Dr Batmanthingamyjig (a nice Iranian chap) which explains that most illnesses are caused by dehydration.

Just popping into the kitchen for some Highland Spring......

P.S. Has anyone tried the Neways oxygenated water for asthma? I keep meaning to try it but haven't got around to it.
