Having lost my baby last year Im now 18 weeks pregnant 🙂
ive had a good time this time round not been to sick or anything like that but I am having terrible trouble with hip and lower back pain. Ive an apt tomoroow with my midwife about it but a few people have mentioned SPD to me. I dont know much about it but I wondered has anyone had it and what can be done foe the pain as paracetamol makes me sick and hot water bottles just arent helping?

Hi Paula

SPD (Symphasis Pubis Dysfunction) is now more commonly known as Pelvic Girdle Dysfunction, an awful but somewhat common condition that develops in pregnancy.

It's great that you're seeing your midwife about this and it's important to get a proper diagnosis.

In this condition the relaxin hormone, produced by the body to prepare the pelvis for birthing, has relaxed the ligaments holding the pelvic bones together too much. This allows them to rub against each other causing excruciating pain.

Once diagnosed you should recieve a physiotherapy referral, as minimising movements is important. Regular massage therapy can help to relax you and soothe the pain and a specific trigger point technique used in reflexology can be effective at reducing pain and increasing movement.

Saying all that lower Back and Hip pain without an instability in the pelvis is also incredibly common in pregnancy. I am yet to meet a pregnant lady that hasn't suffered from it to one degree or another.

Regular massage can be incredibly effective at releasing trapped tension caused by a change in posture and extra weight of the growing baby and you should feel the improvement immediately after the session.

Do make sure you see someone who is trained in pregnancy massage, I would recommend searching for someone who had trained with WellMother founder Suzanne Yates. This is one of the most rigorous courses within the UK.

I hope this is of some help to you.

Best Wishes

Rachael

You could also try Bowen Technique - it worked wonders for one of my young relatives, where physio had sadly made no difference. (The therapist was an ex-midwife).

reflex trigger points?

im 38 weeks pregnant and have be told by the physio i have a pelvic girdle problem, well she said more sacroiliac joint, which i had kinda worked out for myself.

Im a reflexologist and i have been doing some pressure point on the sacroiliac joint reflex i would be interested to know if there is anything else i could work on?

Slowing down and cutting out all the movements that the physio suggested has made a differenace though.

Thankfully i havent got much longer to go.

oh ive just seen this is a very old post.....oh well

Hi, you could visit a homeopath, most of whom regularly treat people with SPD pain. One of the most likely remedies that would be given would be Sepia. You can sometimes buy this over the counter in a chemist or similar shop in a 30c potency and although it's safe to take during pregnancy, I'd recommend professional homeopathic advice about the dose as it would be unwise to take it too frequently or for too long a period. Hello Hom,
I hope you are well 🙂
I did speak to Helios about it and i ended up just getting a few bits for when i go into labour.
I havent got to wait much longer until the baby is here so hopefully things will settle down then.

Hi again, yes I'm good thanks. And yes, if you're experiencing spd, it should be ok after labour, so you've not got long to stick it out. Hope all goes well for you and let us know the good news wen the baby arrives! Hom
