I'm 19 weeks pregnant and have been having a tremendous amount of pain in my hips and pelvis. My dr confirmed it is SPD - Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction and has referred me to an obstetric physiotherapist. The pain has been unbearable at times and yesterday it was so bad I had to crawl on my hands and knees to get around the house.
My Dr said the only thing I can do until the physio appointment is to take paracetemol and try not to do any strenuous exercise or excessive lifting. Was just wondering if anybody had been through this and how they coped with the pain. :012:
Hi Kerrie,
Sorry to hear that you are suffering already. I only suffered with sciatica for a week with my first which was unbearable and yet then they could not offer anything for the pain. I was also on my hands and knees! Just paracetemol and a hot water bottle. I just used heat pads on the areas that I was in agony but thankfully it went after a week.
Am not sure about SPD though. Hope you can get an appointment quickly. Did they recommend any massage (pregnancy) at all. Maybe that would help in between waiting.
Hi
Mctimoney chiropractic treatment can be very effective for SPD as well as acupuncture etc...
No spreading legs apart as this will aggravate the pelvis even more..
I know it's been a long time since this thread was posted in, but to help anyone else who may find it:
Hi,
Gentle Birth book by Gowri Motha reccommends accupuncture and cranial osteopathy...my sis suffered with this pretty bad and she did both of these which gave some relief...she did also have to slow down a lot and try to minimise physical exertion aswell towards the end of pregnancy...
Hope you find some relief from this soon
w*w
Also wanted to say staying off sugar may help to lessen the pain...the book also reccommends staying off sugar too and I have found personally it makes the aches of pregnancy worse immedietly that I eat some...
Hi, I gave birth in June and I had very bad spd in the end I was on crutches it's pretty horrid. I went to see a physio at the hospital who gave me some good tips. Also had Mctimmery and Esoteric soul healing regularly which also helped. I would chat with your midwife maybe they could give you a belt that helps support the bump. Love & Light Sarah x
I suffered SPD during my last 2 pregnancies so I know how painful it can be!
I was given a support belt by the hospital which helped to support my pelvis and hips - it looks like a giant elastic belt which fits round your hips, under your bump. I also had to use crutches. Physio sessions helped show me how to stand, sit and bend to minimise strain on my pelvis. Lifting, standing for long periods and hoovering is a real no-no.
Paracetamol was OK but never got rid of the pain, just made it slightly more bearable. I had a apin killing injection at the hospital.
I found sleeping on my side with a pillow between my knees and one under my bump helped.
My youngest son is now almost 4 and my pelvis still clicks and grinds sometimes although I have no pain now.
During labour, try lying on your side or go on all fours.
I found a water birth amazing as the water made me weightless and took the pressure off my hips and pelvis so it may be worth considering?
All the best xx
For SPD any of the following can be incredibly helpful (all from fully Maternity qualified practitioners):
Maternity reflexology
Acupuncture
Cranial sacral therapy or cranial osteopathy
All of these treatments work gently and not directly on the area.
I am a Maternity Reflexologist and have seen amazing results using reflexology to help my clients who suffer from SPD.
