Does anyone know of any foods, supplements or remedies which help with the healing process and recovery from childbirth. A friend has recently given birth to a beautiful baby boy but had a very traumatic time and required an epesiotmy and lots of stitches - obviously she is in some discomfort and pain and would welcome any suggestions. Also she has very swollen ankles which she wondered if there was anything which would help

RE: Recovery?

This is probably a bit late now, but fresh pineapple, which contains bromeline, is excellent for healing. Don't bother with tinned or juice as the processing kills off the enzyme. Drinking lots of clear fluids will help with the oedema too as it encourages the body to flush through and this helps to get rid of the excess. Standard diuretic stuff like cranberries, blueberries or celery can also help.

There are lots of homoeopathic remedies which are also handy. Those which spring to mind are arnica, hypericum, bellis perrenis and calendula, although don't take calendula for the first couple of days after any kind of stitching as it promotes healing so well that the stitches can actually become embedded.

Hope that helps

RE: Recovery?

Hi
Sometimes if there has been blood pressure problems swelling can continue for a wee while after the birth but does rectify itself quickly, keeping mobile and drinking lots of water as suggested by Lynne will work a treat flushing it out....In relation to anything that you may take orally please seek proper advice first if she is breast feeding as this will undoubtedly as most things do pass into the milk...

Salt bathes are also good for keeping the area clean..
