Hi
I currently have a thread covering the same issue under the Pets Forum so sorry if u r reading same info twice, but, has anybody had any experience of a cat sensing that they (ie you) were pregnant? - My cat has changed towards me over the past couple of weeks and I am hoping that I may be pregnant...Another member has suggested that I would smell different to my cat if I were pregnant so would be keen to know if anyone else has experienced this?!
Many thanks..

RE: Pregnancy and Cats

my animals hang around me much more when i am pregnant, however this does tend to be later in pregnancy...I agree with the smell thing...however as you probably notice if things are a little out of kilter animals are very quick to pick this up and try and comfort or get under your feet and trip you up!! so it could be that your cat is sensing something different which may or may not be a pregnancy..

Anyway good luck with trying and i hope your wishes are fulfilled very soon.

I am 5 months pregnant and as mad as this may make me sound, but my cat has definately become 'gentler' with me.

Hi there
It is strange how animals sense these things. Just one thing though cats are lovely animals I have two myself, if you are pregnant you must be very carefull with hand hygeine when you have touched them as you can get a thing called toxoplasmosis from them which is dangerous for the unborn baby.

Yes definitely! this is one of the first ways I know when I'm pregnant! my cats also hang around me when I'm labouring too - one of cats has been inseperable from me each time I've laboured at home.

RE: Pregnancy and Cats

One of my cats sort of went the other way, although it may be coincidence. During my first pregnancy almost from the start I noticed that my cat started licking her tummy and became much more sensitive. She has progressively got worse over the years and we have tried heaps to get her problem under control. It got so bad that for the last couple of years she has had to wear a collar otherwise she licks herself raw and gets infections. Now 6 years later, I thought she was on her last legs as she was looking incredibly poorly and had lost a lot of weight and generally looked like she was 100. I popped her back to the vet 2 weeks ago who tried her on hormone treatments again (this was the original treatment, but it stopped working) and within 24 hours she looked a million times better, she doesn't need a collar and is totally chilled out, only difference is she is ravenous and eats anything in sight.

Anyway my theory is, but of course there is no evidence to back this up, and her condition may again deteriorate. However I believe when I first got pregnant this caused her a lot of emotional upset, so much so that she became depressed and very jealous. Once the kids were born this made her nervous and twitchy and it is only now that the kids are older that she sees them as less of threat and is therefore able to cope better.

Hope she keeps it up.
