Hi Folks
can any of you clear this up for me, I am doing a course in pregnancy massage and I asked my teacher about follow up treatments after baby is born. I have my swedish massage qualification also indian head. Now my teacher looked a bit disapointed that I was unsure of which treatment, if any would be suitable when breastf feeding. So I have been told to look it up and give her the answer at my next lesson. However I seem to be getting mixed results( as i may do here ). My understanding is that I can give Indian Head massage but not full body swedish massage.
am I right ????
Why not full body swedish? It is a while ago now, but when I had No. 2 child, my idea of a treat was 2 hours on a Saturday morning once a month when my OH babysat and I went to get my legs waxed and had a body massage - including chest. I admit that the therapist had to be a bit creative at the beginning, as I was a regular 'jersey cow', so couldn't lie comfortably face-down without some extra cushioning, but apart from that, any form of treatment was bliss! The chest work was great, especially when I was a new mum, as it helped to ease the stiffness and feeling of congestion. I now treat new mums regularly, as I have specialised in MLD, and this involves alot of chest work.
I have to say that I particularly appreciated hands-on treatment whilst suffering mastitis. The therapist was very gentle and extremely understanding - I went with extra supplies of breast pads, as it helped to stimulate milk-flow, and boy, did I need that!!!
thanks for that quick response, my understanding was not full body, but while I have been looking back on my notes from my class i have a big red astrix next to a note ---- do not massage anyone with cancer or a person who is pregnant or breast feeding while you are training. I think i have misunderstood my own notes.
On the cancer uk website it does not give reasons but states that you should not massage the following
- Are having cancer treatment
- Are very weak
- Have bone fractures
- Have heart problems
- Suffer from arthritis
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
so it just made me doubt myself.
